How to Choose a Personal Trainer

How to Choose a Personal TrainerThere are a number of very good reasons to hire a personal trainer. If you are trying to jump-start your fitness routine, a trainer will get you started on the right track. Likewise, if you are trying to take your training to the next level, a personal trainer can provide the extra bit of push and inspiration needed to achieve your goals. The other reason women hire personal trainers has to do with time and efficiency. If you lead a busy life, and have no time to get to the gym, having a personal trainer come to your home will eliminate the "I`m too busy to exercise" excuse."

These days, many people have decided to call themselves "personal trainers." Some are more qualified than others. For that matter, some are more suitable for you needs than are others. Here are some guidelines for choosing the best personal trainer for your specific fitness needs.

Is She Certified?  Although there are literally hundreds of certifications on the market, only a few are nationally recognized. To further complicate matters, some certifications seem to specialize in different aspects of fitness. However, these specializations can help you decide which type of trainer is best for your needs.

AFAA: The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America is one of the oldest certifications. In general, their guidelines are fairly conservative. While AFAA does have a personal training certification, most of their focus is on group exercise. AFAA certified personal trainers are best suited for women who would prefer a predictable, easy to remember exercise routine.

ACE: The American Council on Exercise is also one of the older certifications. Their methods are a bit more cutting edge. As such, ACE certified personal trainers are suitable for women who would like a bit more variety in their program.

ACSM: The American College of Sports Medicine is considered to be the "Cadillac" of certifications. These personal trainers have a knowledge base that includes a multitude of medical conditions. If you have any sort of health problem, seek the services of an ACSM certified personal trainer.

NSCA: The primary focus of the National Strength and Conditioning Association is strength training. In general, these trainers can be found working in fitness centers.

NASM: The National Academy of Sports Medicine is perhaps the most cutting edge certification on the market. Although they specialize in sport performance, NASM trainers are perfect for anyone who wants to venture into balance and core training.

Aside from certification, there are other factors to consider when choosing a trainer. Here are just a few:

Cost: When considering costs, think in the long range. Will you be able to afford her rates for a considerable length of time?

Payment Plans: Does she require you to pay for a number of sessions in advance? If so, are you okay with that?

Home or Gym? Some trainers work exclusively out of a gym. Others are strictly home trainers.

Sport Specific :  If you are hiring a trainer for sport-specific skills, you might want to choose a trainer who participates in that particular sport.
