Fitness Tips for the Winter

Fitness Tips for the WinterWinter tends to be the time when we slow down the most. Without the summer sun and hot temperatures, most of us retreat to the comfort of large, baggy clothing, and layers. Without the need to show skin, fitness often takes a backseat and with holidays, get-togethers, and cold weather to keep us indoors, this makes it easy to become lazy and fall out of physical activity. To avoid this hibernation phase, it is important to learn how to adjust your fitness routine to accommodate the change in the seasons.

One of the worst things you can do for your body and your health is to become less physically active during the winter. Most of us tend to pack on the pounds during the winter season and the lack of physical fitness can make getting fit even more difficult when the summer rolls back around. This leaves many people anxious to lose the pounds in a matter of weeks instead of staying physically fit all year round. When you continue to workout and include moderate exercise several times a week, you have the ability to keep the weight off, tone your body and have a head start on your summertime physique. So hop off the couch and learn to get active, regardless of the weather!

Needless to say, winter weather tends to eliminate most days for outdoor exercise, but that’s okay. If you’re confined to your house, avoid the couch and television and instead get active by doing chores. Sure, it may not sound like fun, but even doing activities such as vacuuming, sweeping, laundry, or dusting count as exercise and can get your heartbeat going. Make it more fun by adding your favorite music into the mix and dance while doing your chores. You’ll be surprised by how energized you’ll feel afterwards - not to mention your house will be spotless!

The winter season is a great reason to join a gym. During the winter months you’ll have access to tons of exercise equipment, a swimming pool, sauna, and exercise classes. Becoming an avid gym goer a few times a week will help keep you in shape and allow you to get out of the house once in a while. Even going to the mall for a quick stroll counts as exercise. You may not realize it but all those rounds you tend to do while walking around your mall are a great workout for your body overall, especially your legs. If you don’t have the cash to indulge, simply do a couple rounds of window shopping. Bring a friend along for motivation. This is a wonderful way to get out of the house and do something physically active without much effort.

Make things more challenging by opting to take the stairs wherever you go. This can include work and when you run your errands. Instead of sitting on your butt during your lunch break, get out and walk around your building. Better yet, invite your coworkers along and create a walking group. This gives you all a chance to get away from the office, catch up on each other’s lives, and fit in some quality exercise time. Doing this daily is an easy way to incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine.

Or you can look into taking up a new winter sport such as skiing or snowboarding. You can enjoy the outdoors, get a great rigorous workout, and add a new experience to your life.
