Get Fit with Your Pooch!

Get Fit with Your Pooch! If you’re a health-nut and own a dog, you’re in luck. Workout routines can get boring and even trips to the gym can get old. For those searching for new and fun alternatives to get physically fit, all you need to do is turn to your pet for the answer. Using your dog to get a workout is a process that will allow you to spend quality time with your fuzzy friend, not to mention that the both of you will benefit from the exercise!

Golden retrievers, Border Collies, Rottweiler and other rambunctious breeds are ideal for exercising with. These types of dogs love to be active, interact well with their owners and others and make for a great exercise partner. Smaller dogs may not achieve the same effect but if you own a medium to larger breed, you’ll be able to get the most out of your workout.

Exercising with your pooch doesn’t have to be taken literally. Any physical activity you engage in with your pet effectively burns calories, works out your body and can allow you to stay fit. Instead of running on the treadmill at the gym, switch this routine up and go jogging with your dog a few days out of the week, or even daily, depending on how much time you have in your daily schedule/routine. Jogging or running with your dog can be done a few different ways. The traditional method is to simply jog side-by-side with your dog or with your pooch slightly ahead. This can be done with or without a leash. Find a steady tempo that will allow the two of you to run or jog at the same pace. If you want a challenge, hop on your bike and ride with your four-legged friend following next to you. This exercise works best for larger breeds with good stamina. Don’t get carried away, though. Read your dog’s body language. If your dog is panting heavily and starts to slow in pace, chances are your pet is tired and needs some rest. Carry a bottle of water for you and find a place to give your dog water along your path.

Are you the outdoorsy type? Then pack your bag with a big bottle of water, snacks, a small bowl and doggies treats and take your pooch on a hike. The two of you will be able to get out and smell the fresh air, climb rocks and hills and get a total body workout. Walking will get your heart rate to speed up and is ideal for giving your legs and thighs a wake up call. While you take in the beauty of nature, your dog will enjoy walking by your side or running ahead and chasing after anything that moves. Just an hour or two of hiking outdoors will be more than enough exercise for both you and your pet.

Keeping within the outdoor activities, the next time you’re feeling adventurous, pack up your dog and head to a nearby lake approved for swimmers and jump in, along with your dog, too! Refresh your body by doing a few laps in the water and bring a floatable toy you can use to toss to your dog while in the water. Make it a team effort by chucking the toy as far as you can and having a swim race to see who can get there first.
