The first thing to understand is that if your child doesn’t take to team sports right away, that’s okay. Instead, start playing with your child when they’re young and test to see what physical activity they take to best. Some kids can be pretty shy when it comes to playing sports and any misstep on their part - falling, missing the basket, playing the game wrong - can make for a difficult time trying to enjoy and appreciate the activity. By engaging your child in these activities at home, your son or daughter will feel more secure with themselves and playing with you will allow them to express themselves without worry. Even if they make mistakes, doing so in front of you is much better than in front of fellow peers.
If your child has an interest in team sports but is hesitant about actually taking part in it, do some research and try to find a sport, team, coach and players that aren’t too intimidating or competitive. While the goal is to have fun win or lose, many team sports for kids can get pretty heated. Talk to other parents and see how the team gets along, whether the coach is pushy or laid back, and how the players interact with each other.
Still can’t find a proper physical activity for your child? Don’t worry. Try to find an activity that speaks to your child’s natural talent and skills. Keep in mind your child’s train of thought: if he/she is slightly overweight, chances are they won’t want to try out for the swim team or may not have the stamina to run track. Maybe your child is afraid of the ball so basketball, baseball and volleyball may not be a good idea. Can’t manage to find any specific activity that interests your child? Then turn to regular physical activities outside of the team sports world that they’ll enjoy, while benefiting from the exercise. Examples include: dance classes, skateboarding, golf, tennis, inline skating, cycling, cheerleading, gymnastics, yoga or martial arts.
No matter what your child decides on, show them your support at all times and don’t frustrate them or yourself. Let them know that whatever they choose, you’ll be there to make sure they stay motivated and most of all, have fun.
