Gym Etiquette 101

Gym Etiquette 101Life is filled with rules, and the gym where you choose to workout is no exception. This hangout may not feel as posh as your local five-star eating establishment, but common courtesy still applies here. If you take the time to learn a few of the niceties of the workout area, you will find that you’ll feel much more welcome and comfortable in these surroundings. The general rule to remember is that everyone goes to the gym for the same purpose, and by following a few universal procedures that are unique to this type of environment, you can greatly enhance everyone’s workout time.

Weight Training Rituals

This may be the room where male machismo struts its stuff and grunts abound, but there is still some common courtesies that should be followed here. First, never sit on a machine or bench during your rest time, particularly if you see someone waiting for the same machine. By getting up in between sets, you allow another person to work in with you on a specific piece of equipment. By the same token, if you are patiently waiting for a machine that someone is merely occupying without working on it, it is perfectly acceptable to politely ask that person if you could work a set in with him.

When you are finished with a machine, make sure that you unload the weights that you were using. This enables the next person in line to load up her specific weights without the inconvenience of removing all of yours first. By the same token, return any used dumbbells to the appropriate place on the rack when you are finished with them. That way, no one will have to go on a hunt for the ten-pound dumbbells among the “he-man” fifty pounders. Never leave any types of dumbbells or other weights on the floor where they can become a tripping hazard or a nuisance for the training staff to put away later.

Cardio Class

These same types of courtesies apply to the cardio equipment as well, even though the rules will differ slightly in this room. If you see that the machines are all full, and there are more folks waiting for a turn, don’t grab a treadmill and keep it to yourself for the next hour. Most gyms will have a policy that during busy times, cardio work must be limited to 20 minutes per machine. It is polite to adhere to this rule, or opt to visit the gym during less busy times of the day. When you have completed your cardio workout, make sure that you wipe down your equipment well, so that the next person does not have to get close and personal with your sweat.

With a few rules of the gym tucked under your belt, you will become a much more welcome addition to your local fitness center. Courtesy is a good thing – even when sweat happens.
