Getting to the Gym: How to Stick with your Commitment

Getting to the Gym: How to Stick with your CommitmentIf you are a regular visitor to your neighborhood gym, you probably notice something about this time of year. While the crowds may have increased considerably when January 1 rolled around, those same crowds have probably already begun to thin somewhat. By the time February bids adieu, you may see even less of those New Year`s folks hanging around. And about the time April showers begin to make an appearance, it will be business as usual once again.

Why is it so hard for folks to keep their commitment to get fit? Part of the reason is probably that it isn`t easy to stick with a three, four or five day schedule each week, and many simply give up. Maybe they don`t see the results that they were hoping for quickly enough, so they turn to other ways to fill their time rather than sweating it out at the gym.

You don`t have to one that starts strong in January and fizzles by spring. There are some tricks that will help you to keep your commitment to the gym. And if you can make it six months or more, the workout habit has successfully been formed, and you will be much less likely to drop the ball as you begin to see some of the benefits that a regular exercise program can reap. We`ve got the tips you need to keep up the good work (or workout) over the long haul.

Hire a Trainer

Most gyms offer personal trainers for hire, and this is the perfect way to keep your commitment to working out for more than a few weeks. First, you are paying this guy to whip your body into shape, so you darn well better show up to get your money`s worth. Second, if your trainer is worth his weight in spandex, he will not let you off the hook when you begin to wimp out on your workout. He`s heard all the excuses before, and he`s certainly not going to buy yours. A personal trainer can be the perfect tool to keep that gym habit going.

Get a Buddy

A workout pal will be almost as good as a personal trainer at holding you accountable, although you won`t be paying her to do so. Having a friend to exercise with will also make the process more fun, so it will be more likely that you will make the effort to get there for your sweaty bonding experience. Grab a friend or your spouse and promise each other that you will both make the effort to get to your workout date every week.

Reward your Progress

Have you made it through your first four weeks without missing a single workout? That calls for a celebration! Treat yourself to a pampering massage or those sexy gold hoops you`ve had your eye on. By rewarding yourself for the hard work you`ve done, it will make you more apt to keep up the effort. Set goals and milestones, and make sure to celebrate each one. Your body and your health are worth it.

The gym is the perfect way to lose weight and get fit, but it can`t do much good unless you actually go and use it. With these tips and tricks, you will be much more likely to stick with your gym commitment until you see the results you are hoping for.
