Sometimes, when we talk about food, we might say, "it`s all in the presentation". The same thing applies to people. Our posture, our movements and the way we carry ourselves are essential to how we present ourselves to the general public. If we move well, we present an aura of power, grace and style. In contrast, we might spend hours in the gym, but if we slouch, nobody will notice our well-defined abdominals. We can follow all of the best makeup tips on carefair.com, but if we always walk with our head facing down, who is going to see how good we actually look?
Unfortunately, the ergonomics of our daily office lives is not conducive to good posture. We sit hunched at our desks with our head in an unnatural position. In some cases, our computer is located on one side of the desk, which means that one side of our body is becoming stronger than the other. After sitting this way for eight hours a day, five days a week, this posture sometimes becomes habitual. Poor posture might make us susceptible to chronic pain and injury. It can also hide our most attractive features from anyone who might like a chance to appreciate them. Our waist looks thicker and our chest seems narrower. As we get older, we may even lose a couple of inches off of our height.
Here`s the good news. There is a solution, and it`s called Pilates. Have you ever wondered why Pilates enthusiasts seem to have incredibly toned abdominal muscles? It`s not just the specific abdominal exercises that create this definition. Instructors of the Pilates method view the body as a whole. As such, the exercises in a Pilates program are specifically designed to correct the muscular imbalances that might contribute to poor posture and injury. As a result, the body looks more symmetrical, and is therefore in better alignment. Correcting muscular imbalances also improves movement patterns, which in turn contributes to a sense of coordination, grace and posture.
For example, here`s a popular Pilates cue: "Pull up in the front and down in the back". How are you sitting as you read this article? Chances are you slouched forward, and your shoulders are hunched up. In a Pilates class, you would learn to use your deep core muscles in manner that will help you keep your torso in an upright and properly aligned position. You would also learn exercises that would help you relax your shoulders. As a result, your posture will improve, and you might end up looking younger, slimmer and more graceful.
