The Pros and Cons of Circuit Training

The Pros and Cons of Circuit TrainingThere are plenty of choices in the world of exercise today, but few are as efficient or challenging as circuit training. This type of workout will effectively help you to burn a good number of calories and get fit within a shorter period of time. You can do circuit training at the gym or in the privacy of your own home. Some outdoor trails even have circuit stations so that you can enjoy your workout in the great outdoors. On the surface, circuit training may look as though it has something for everyone, and on one level, it probably does. But is circuit training the best workout choice for you?

Before you answer that question, you need to have a good idea of precisely what circuit training is. This type of workout will combine cardio exercise with strength training to provide an overall workout that will address most of the major muscle groups as well as your heart and lungs. You will perform each exercise in a short burst, take a brief rest, and then switch to the next activity. Examples of circuit training exercises include pushups, jumping rope, squats, jogging and bench presses. The idea is that you will get a complete fitness training that works every part of your body within a short period of time. Most circuit training sessions last anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour.

Pros

Circuit training is a fairly intense workout, so it should not be performed on consecutive days. However, two or three circuit training sessions each week can effectively help you to burn the fat and calories and feel more fit and energetic at the same time. The other big advantage to circuit training is that it is not the type of workout that you will get bored with easily, since the variety, intensity and speed of the workout are sure to keep things interesting. This is good news for the beginning exercisers, since they will be more likely to stick with their exercise program, and beneficial to advanced fitness buffs who might be finding themselves a bit bored with their regular exercise fare.

Cons

So what is the downside to this seemingly flawless workout plan? While the disadvantages might appear to be few and far between, there are some factors for you to consider before you launch yourself into the circuit training circle. First, if you have a health concern like high blood pressure, circuit training may not be a good choice for you. Before beginning any type of exercise program, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor to find out which type of exercise will be the safest and most beneficial for you. Second, if you are looking for a way to pump up the biceps and carve out those pecs, circuit training is probably not going to give you the bulk you are looking for. Still, if you are simply seeking an exercise program that will give you the biggest calorie burning bang for your exercise buck, circuit training might be worth checking out.
