How to Make Your Own Deodorant

How to Make Your Own DeodorantMost people don’t give a second thought about deodorant, but for those who are allergic to typical deodorant formulas, the task of staying fresh can be somewhat challenging. When you’re in need of a deodorant that won’t irritate your skin, you can turn to natural recipes for creating your own homemade deodorants. Now you can save money and make sure your skin is happy.

The problem with regular store-bought deodorants is that many of them contain ingredients that can cause allergic reactions when applied to the skin. Toxic chemicals like aluminum oxide and synthetic fragrances are common culprits against those with sensitive skin. Instead of being at the mercy of your own body odor, sensitive skin types can now find comfort in creating their very own skin-friendly deodorants using essential oils.

You can make deodorant that is a naturally dry mix of corn starch and baking soda mixed with essential oils or a blend of essential oils alone. To find out what scent you want, you can use the following guide: lavender (soothing, drying to the skin, gentle and cleansing), peppermint and spearmint (purifying, clean smell, cooling), patchouli (musky, sweet, moisturizing), eucalyptus (gentle, soothing, refreshing, acts as a tonic on the skin), cinnamon and clove (great for antibacterial purposes), and melaleuca and rosemary (astringent, fights bacteria). Of course there are many more essential oils you can use…it just depends on what scent you prefer and what works for your skin.

One simple recipe to do at home involves the following ingredients: 2 ½ cups of water and your choice of one tablespoon of dried lovage leaves, 2 tablespoons of freshly chopped lovage leaves, or one tablespoon of dried and chopped lovage root. Take your lovage leaves and water and put them together into a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and then cover and allow it to simmer for five minutes. Let the mixture cool completely and then strain into a jar. Put the jar in a cool place. The shelf life of this type of deodorant is one week so make sure to get the most out of what you’ve made. In order to apply the deodorant, take a cotton ball, soak it in the mixture, and wipe it over the skin of your underarms. It will dry naturally.

To make your own deodorant bar, you can use the following recipe: 10 drops of rosewood essential oil, 1 ½ ounces of beeswax, ½ ounce of cocoa butter, one ounce of coconut oil and 4 drops of each of the following essential oils: coriander, Spanish sage, and cypress. First, melt the cocoa butter and beeswax in a saucepan. Remove the mixture from the heat and add your coconut oil. Next, stir until the contents are completely melted. Let the mixture cool but it should still be warm and retain a liquid consistency. Finally, add all of your essential oils and pour into a deodorant container and allow cool.
