How to Choose the Right Massage Oil for Aromatherapy

How to Choose the Right Massage Oil for AromatherapyOut of all the types of massage out there, aromatherapy is one of the most sought after. The oils used for this massage can create a relaxed and euphoric effect on the senses and leave your entire being in Heaven. However, if you want to make the most out of your next massage or give one to your special someone, it helps to know which oils you should be using.

Aromatherapy has been an ancient practice since the days of the Egyptians. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants through steam distillation or expression. These oils are used in everything from aromatherapy, massages, candles, perfume and even skincare and hair care products. The reason essential oils and aromatherapy massage go hand-in-hand is due to the oil’s ability to provide natural effects of relaxation, healing and uplifting sensations.

You can purchase massage oils for aromatherapy online, in health food stores, herb shops, specialty stores and even the drug store. However, it is important to buy the right oils and to know what to look for. Herb stores and specialty shops are often the best places to go because you can consult with people trained in aromatherapy who have extensive knowledge of each type of oil. The best essential oils to buy for an aromatherapy massage are contained in glass bottles that are tinted with a light-blocking color, usually blue or dark amber. Oil can be damaged by light so having the right container will preserve its potency. Stay away from essential oils contained in plastic bottles or with rubber tops since the oils eventually dissolve the plastic and can become contaminated.

Commonly used oils for aromatherapy massages include Chamomile (soothing and relaxing), Clove (warming effect), Bergamot (refreshing and uplifting), Eucalyptus (stimulating), Lavender (therapeutic and calming), Myrrh (rejuvenating and toning), and Tea Tree (refreshing and cleansing), among many others. Decide which massage oil will treat the aches, pains or other problems you are experiencing and be sure to do a patch test on the skin to test for an allergic reaction. Women who are pregnant or may be pregnant should talk to their doctor before using any essential oils for massage, since some oils can be harmful if too much is inhaled.

Also choose essential oils that you enjoy the smell of. If the scent is too strong or makes you nauseas, chances are you aren’t going to want it massaged into your skin. Aromatherapy with the right massage oils will stimulate and sooth aching joints, sore muscles, relieve tension and kinks as well as provide you with an overall calming effect that will do your mind, body and soul a world of wonders.

To play it safe, before using any essential oils for your aromatherapy massage, consult with a qualified aromatherapy practitioner who can give you more detailed information about the oils you want to use as well as tips and tricks to get the most out of your massage.
