Plastic People

A Male teenager’s view on Plastic Surgery

Plastic PeopleIn 2004 there were nearly 11.9 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. Everything from liposuction, to tummy tucks, and even breast augmentation. In fact 19% of all plastic surgeries performed (over 330,000 surgeries) involved breasts.

Is it just me, or has plastic surgery taken over our nation’s bodies? Has plastic surgery really become our solution to vanity? Or is it just something that makes us feel good about ourselves? It must be, because from 2003 to 2004 there was a 44% increase of cosmetic procedures!

Why is this country so fascinated with breasts and beauty? Why has such a dramatic portion of the country chosen to enlarge, or decrease their breasts? It could be for many reasons. A good number of celebrities in the media have been accused of enlarging their breasts. Most of them deny it. But is the influence of fame and fortune spreading into the American heartland?

Another cause might be the values in America. In every magazine, newspaper, billboard, and television set we see what has come to be known as “the average American.” She’s a thin, beautiful girl, with a wonderful family and career, with everything going for her. Maybe the reason for the increase in surgery is so American’s can fill a gap of what were missing.

I know that some of us have everything we’ve ever dreamed of. Some of us though, don’t have everything that we see in our televisions. Maybe a desire to fulfill this perfect lifestyle is driving the sensation of plastic people.

Has the media affected us to such a length that we feel we need to change our faces, legs and chests? I know the phrase, “are they real” all too well now. It seems like an everyday thing. You walk past a person on the street, and say, “Oh those can’t be real.”

Some people even seem to be ashamed of being accused of enlarging their breasts. Why would we feel ashamed? We went to such lengths to feel better about ourselves. Why let it all be in vain?

I don’t think we will ever know the real answer. We do know that this sensation is far from over. It’s only going to continue to grow, and prosper. The average breast size of America is going to keep going up. I know we haven’t seen the end to new surgeries and advances in making the perfect person.
