How to Choose a Destination Spa

How to Choose a Destination SpaWhat if we told you that you could take a vacation and come back slimmer, fitter and healthier? Does this sound too good to be true? It`s not. A week at a destination spa can either jump start your fitness, wellness and skin care program, or enhance the one to which you already adhere. There are destination spas throughout the Unite States, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe. So many spas, so little time. Do you want to know how to choose the best one for your needs? Read on!

Determine Your Goals: Why do you want to take a spa vacation? If you are looking to lose weight, choose a spa that has a specific diet plan, as well as frequent opportunities for aerobic exercise. Spas that focus primarily on yoga and meditation are often referred to as "retreats." Keep in mind that this type of spa may serve a totally vegan diet. And speaking of food…

How do you feel about giving up alcohol and caffeine? Some spas want you to break the caffeine and alcohol habit. However, if these supposed vices are simple occasional pleasures, as opposed to vices, you may not want to give them up. If going without your one cup of coffee in the morning and your one glass of wine with dinner causes more stress than the perceived health benefits, you might want to choose a different spa.

Are you interested in predominately outdoor or indoor activities?  Some destination spas focus on indoor classes, such as Pilates, yoga, body sculpting and aerobics. Others specialize in outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming or mountain biking.

Treatments or Activities: Are you more interested in fitness or skin care, body treatments and massage? Some spas specialize in their hair, skin and body treatments. Others focus more on fitness activities.

Traveling companion: Would you prefer to visit an all-women`s destination spa, or are would you like to visit with your husband or boyfriend? Although spas are usually more popular with women, men are beginning to realize the benefits of taking a week off to care for their health. If you would rather not take a vacation without your significant other, choose a spa that is popular with both genders.

"We don`t need no education!" Or do you? Some spas feature nightly lectures on health and wellness. If you feel that, in your case, this would be a perfect example of preaching to the choir, choose a destination spa that provides a bit more entertaining options for your evening activities.

Do you want luxurious or rustic accommodations? Some destination spas, particularly the ones that are most expensive, provide high-end accommodations. Others have more Spartan rooms. After all, they want you to get outside, not hang out in your room.
