The first thing you will want to do is set the mood. You can do this by dimming the lights, lighting candles and playing some tranquil music on low to allow for a romantic atmosphere. You may also want to turn off any devices such as phones so that there are no interruptions.
In order to give a successful massage, an important item you should have on hands is aromatherapy oil. Without this key item, your massage just won’t be the same.
Before you purchase the oil you should always remember to read the label since some should not be used on intimate parts of the body.
Once you have determined that the oil is safe for use, look for those that don’t absorb quickly into the skin. If you’d prefer, there are warming oils that heat up as you use them. These are wonderful for areas like the breasts and genitals, but are also great for areas where you or your partner may be experiencing soreness or pain.
Believe it or not, olive oil is great for massages. Not only is it available almost anywhere, it can be much more reasonable than other oils that are on the market. Choose an extra virgin oil since it is good for every skin type and has the added benefit of a warming sensation while providing relief to stiff muscles. For best results, you should dilute the oil.
Another great oil for massages is grape seed oil. The oil is non-allergenic and is also good for all skin types. An added benefit of grape seed oil is that it is great for skin irritations like eczema and psoriasis.
Jojoba oil is also great for massages. Jojoba can be safely used with other oils and can be store longer than most. The only downfall to this oil is that it absorbs very easily and should only be used full strength for this reason.
Aside from the oils above, there are many other oils you can try for massages. A few just to name are, sweet almond, coconut and almond oil. You can add these to any of the oils above or use them alone. You can also add your own aromatherapy scents to all of the oils, but just be certain that the scents are safe for use on skin. Lavender is a wonderful choice since it has a calming effect. Eucalyptus and peppermint are both excellent for stimulating massages.
Now that you know what oils to use, you will want to find a place for the massage. While a bed can be a great place for this, you might also consider a table with some form of padding. This is actually a great option since you don’t have to lean over to give the massage. Just make sure that your partner is in a comfortable position as well or the massage won’t be beneficial.
Once you’ve chosen the spot for your massage and are ready to begin, you should start with the neck and work your way down to the shoulders then along side of the biceps. When massaging, remember to use a firm, but gentle touch. One way to know if you are using the correct touch is to listen to your partner. If he or she is complimenting you on your technique, then you know you are doing it right.
For the biceps, use the tips of your fingers to massage and go back to the shoulders and then down the sides of the spine with a firm, but gentle pressure. Next, work your way down to the lower part of the back where the spine meets with the buttocks. Concentrate on this area for a while since this it full of nerves. Repeat the same technique on the way back up to the arms, using short upward strokes.
Using the same techniques as above, use your fingertips and the flat part of your palm to massage the calves, inner thighs, behind the knees and the feet.
For a thorough foot massage, look for a foot cream or a moisturizing cream to use instead of or along with the oil. When you are ready to begin, place a decent sized amount of the cream onto your hand and rub it into the base of the foot and around the top. Completely cover the foot with the cream to make the massage easier and painless.
Using your thumbs, place them next to each other in the center of the base of the foot and then move your thumbs in circles while gently pressing into the base of the foot. Next, move your thumbs slowly up and down the foot being careful of any sensitive spots on your partner’s feet.
After a while, begin pressing your thumbs in and out of the base of the foot while moving them up and down the length of the foot. Moving to the top of the foot, allow your thumbs to gently work outwards from your partner’s leg out towards his toes.
Now have your partner turn onto his or her back and start the massage techniques all over again. Work the arms first, then down the chest and to the stomach. When massaging the stomach use a light touch. Next, massage the hips, top of the legs, around the genitals, lower legs and the feet. Remember to take special care with any sensitive areas using only a light touch.
If you’d like to take the romantic massage a little further, while your partner is lying on their back you can interrupt by kissing certain areas of his or her body and then continue with the massage. You can also choose for both of you to wear nothing during the massage for a more sensual experience or take a hot shower or relaxing bath afterwards.
After you have enjoyed the experience of giving and receiving a romantic massage, why not consider investing in a book or DVD on massage to further your experience?
