Steamroom and Sauna Treatments

Relaxing, But What Can They Do For the Skin?

Steamroom and Sauna TreatmentsI have to admit that sometimes the only thing that motivates me enough to get me through my workout at the gym, is the thought of the relaxing steamroom visit I always treat myself to afterward. Think of it as a sort of reward for beating procrastination. But many of us gym-goers don`t realize that the steamroom and sauna have more to offer than just relaxing us with a warm place to lie and enjoy the quiet. Steamroom and sauna treatments are great for our helath an the health of our skin in more than one way.

How Does It Work?

The body is an organ - the largest organ of the body. And just like any other organ, such as the liver or kidneys, for example, it aids in the process of removing and expelling unwanted and toxic materials from the body. The process by which skin does this is called sweating. Sweat contains `urea`, the same thing that makes up urine, and is the liquid that carries waste, such as ammonia, out of our bodies. Hence, any time we sweat, our body is cleansing itself of toxins.

We`ve all experienced break-outs or cysts in response to something our bodies or skin didn`t like. Anytime a toxic substance is taken into the body, the skin will form boils to rid itself of the toxin. This is why people who consume toxic and addictive substance, such as drug users, will experience severe cysts and boils on the skin. Hence, anytime we are induced to sweat, it is cleansing to the body and skin. Many people swear by steamrooms and saunas for respiratory ailments and common colds.

Steamroom and Sauna Therapy For Healthy Skin

Not only is the steamroom and sauna great for cleansing the system, it`s great for cleansing the toxins from skin and from clogged pores. Pores, in response to the heat and stimulation, open too allow for induced sweating and the dirt and oil accumulated within the skin is released. The heat from a steamroom or sauna can soften skin problem areas as well, such as calluses and cysts. This therapy is especially helpful for people who can`t or don`t exercise, since they`re skin rarely goes through the natural process of sweating. A new and improved version of steamroom and sauna therapy involves using herbs and aromatic oil during the treatment that have therapeutic and stress-relieving benefits.

Steamroom and Sauna Tips

Since the heat of a sauna can be drying to the skin, we recommend taking some hydrating oil or lotion with you - tea tree oil is great because of it`s therapeutic smell and hydrating properties. Also, be careful you suffer from acne as steamroom and sauna treatments can aggravate problem skin by raising it`s temperature. Always shower before entering the steamroom or sauna so as to avoid growth of fungi, and finally, don`t spend more than 15 minutes at a time in either one as this can raise blood pressure to dangerous levels.
