Traditional day spas always carry the facials, massages, mud baths and similar services but why settle for the run-of-the-mill treatments when there are so many more exotic options to choose from? While day spas in the United States have done a great job of staying on top of the latest trends when it comes to certain treatments and services, sometimes one has to travel to another country to really discover unique spa treatments. The next time you plan on an international excursion, make sure to find out if any of the services below are available near your hotel:
Vinotherapy
Love wine? Then you’ll definitely want to give vinotherapy a try. Day spas in France and Spain are becoming immensely popular thanks to this procedure, which uses fine wine in large doses to treat a person’s skin. Examples of such services include barrel baths (the details are exactly as the name suggests), regular red wine baths, Sauvignon massages, Merlot wraps and Cabernet scrubs. Vinotherapy is solely based on the proven health benefits that a grape’s skin, seeds and leaves have, due to their high levels of antioxidants, polyphenols, antocyanosides and procyanidols. Whether you plan on drinking it or bathing in it, it doesn’t hurt to see what vinotherapy has to offer if you’re planning on visiting Spain or France.
Fangotherapy
On the name alone, most people would not be able to even guess what fangotherapy is - or if it’s something they even want to have done to them for that matter. However, this completely legit spa treatment is a highly sought after one in Europe - mainly in Italy. In fact, “fango” is Italian for “mud.” In essence, fangotherapy deals with special mud wraps that are used to not just pamper the body but actually treat certain conditions, such as arthritis. It is also used for treating cellulite and is a great method of detox for the body overall. Although there are mud wraps available at day spas in the United States, those done in Europe are on a whole different level. Because of the mud’s healing properties, Italian residents are even allowed to be treated for their health conditions using fangotherapy a few days out of the year, at the expense of the Italian government. While tourists will have to pay, the benefits are definitely worth it.
Chrysotherapy
Although it may not be obvious based on the name, chrysotherapy is the practice of using gold to treat certain ailments and conditions. Spas in Southwest Asia are particularly fond of featuring this spa treatment, which has been known to be effective at treating depression, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension and bad circulation by using gold as a fine powder and applying it to the body in the form of a body mask and in gold-infused oils, among many other types of treatments.
