Thalassotherapy and Mud Baths

Treatments from the Earth and Ocean

Thalassotherapy and Mud BathsThe most healing and beneficial spa treatments are often rooted in nature. Thalassotherapy and mud baths are two such treatments. Both are prescribed for variety of skin and body ailments, and are thought to promote detoxification, relaxation and healthy skin.

Thalassotherapy: The Restorative Powers of Seawater Thalassotherapy is based on the theory that seawater has powerful effects upon the skin and body. Seawater contains trace elements of magnesium, potassium, calcium sulphates and sodium. When used in treatments such as seawater showers, seaweed wraps, immersion baths and marine-based facials, these minerals are absorbed through the pores. Typical treatments include warm seawater immersions, massage by pressurized jets, and body wraps. The seawater is always at body temperature, making it possible for mineral ions to enter the blood. This process helps the body`s blood and lymph circulation, accelerating the metabolism. The jets of water help massage away tension and their "pummeling" action is thought to fight cellulite. Many people claim thalassotherapy does wonders for the following conditions: · Eczema · Dermatitis · Psoriasis · Asthma · Bronchitis · Muscle atrophy · Hypertension · Cellulite Recommended for Sensitive Skin In her book, The Skin Type Solution, dermatologist Leslie Berman says that dry, sensitive skin types can benefit from thalassotherapy skin and body treatments.

Dr. Berman says that seaweed and seawater can help hydrate and heal irritated and parched skin. Most thalassotherapy treatment spas are in Europe. If a trip to a European destination spa isn`t in the cards for you, try using seawater or seaweed-based skin and body care products for similar effects.

Mud Baths for Relaxation and Pain Relief Sitting in the mud might not sound like a health or beauty treatment, but that doesn’t stop people from flocking to Calistoga in Northern California to experience its authentic mud baths. For many, taking a mud bath is the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation. Others seek health and complexion benefits. Mud baths are thought to help detoxify the skin and ease muscle and joint pain from arthritis.

What`s in the Mud? Like seawater, the mud bath has a high mineral content. It consists of local volcanic ash, imported peat, and boiling hot spring water. Sometimes essential oils are added to the mix, adding an uplifting or relaxing aromatherapy experience. Bathing in mud is an intense experience. For the first 10 minutes, you “float” in warm that is just over 100 degrees. Next, you rinse off and take a mineral bath and steam treatment. During the last part of the treatment, you’ll be swaddled in a blanket wrap while your slowly cool down. Mud baths aren’t for everyone. Extremely claustrophobic people probably won’t be comfortable during this treatment. Likewise, if you’re pregnant or are under a doctor’s care, you may be advised to skip the mud bath.
