Turn Your Kitchen into a Day Spa

Turn Your Kitchen into a Day SpaWho has time to make an appointment at a day spa? Better yet, who has the money to blow on a head-to-toe pampering? Not many, especially women who are on a budget, have full-time jobs, or hold down a household with children. But it is possible to treat yourself to a beauty treatment that won’t drain your wallet. All you need is to look around your kitchen.

There are plenty of homemade recipes for facial cleansers, masks and other skin care products. But if you want a full body treatment, check out these ideal recipes for your hands and feet, hair and even a special recipe for a homemade face-lift! The most common ingredients used in this type of homemade day spa include, but are not limited to: milk, honey, fruit, vinegar, juice, and essential oils.

Hand & Foot Care

Banana Hand & Foot Cream: mix bananas, honey, lemon juice and natural margarine into a thick paste. Apply generously to hands and feet and cover with gloves and heavy socks. Wear the cream overnight and wash off thoroughly in the morning. Hands and feet will become smooth and soft.

Fingernail Treatment: Beat 1 egg yolk in a small bowl. Soak clean fingernails for 5 minutes and then rinse. Afterwards, soak hands and nails in a solution of pure castile soap and water in a large bowl for 10-15 minutes and then rinse. This will moisturize hands and strengthen weak and brittle nails.

Hair Care

Avocado Deep Conditioner: Peel ½ avocado (remove the pit) and mix with contents of 1 small jar of mayonnaise in a medium-sized bowl using your hands. Once it has become a consistent green color, smooth the mixture onto your hair from roots to ends. Cover with a shower cap and wait 20 minutes before rinsing.

Natural Hairspray: Chop ½ orange and ½ lemon and place in a pot with 2 cups water. Boil until water has been reduced in half. Cool and strain. Place orange and lemon pieces in a spray bottle and add one ounce rubbing alcohol. Store at room temperature for 2 weeks. If needed, add water to reduce stickiness.

Face

Homemade face-lift: Blend a handful of strawberries, grapes, ½ pear, ½ apple, and 1 ounce orange juice using a blender. Apply a thin layer of honey to your face first and then apply the blended fruit mixture. Leave mixture on your face for 30 minutes and then rinse with warm water. If desired, follow with a rinse of homemade pH balancer (see below):

pH Balancer: Combine 3 cups distilled water with 1/3 cups apple cider vinegar. Pour into a container and store in the bathroom when not in use.

With practice, you’ll soon be your own beauty and skin care guru! Introduce these recipes to your friends and hold a get-together where all of you can benefit from your kitchen’s everyday products. You’ll be a hit with your own kitchen day spa!
