If this were a perfect world, we would all look like the gorgeous and savvy female lawyers you see on shows such as “Law & Order” or old school shows like “Ally McBeal.” Unfortunately, those women are actresses who have stylists that specialize in getting just the right outfits to put together the most dynamite business suit ensembles. It’s rare that any business suit we find in a department store could fit us to a tee like on television. However, if you can shop smart and find pieces that flatter your unique body shape, you can come pretty close to what you see on the small screen.
Ever try on a business suit and felt ridiculous? This could be for a number of reasons. If you’re not used to wearing this type of wardrobe, it can feel uncomfortable or stuffy. One of the main reasons women don’t feel good when trying on business suits is because they aren’t shopping with their body shape in mind. It doesn’t matter if your body is a perfect 10, pear-shaped, broad-shouldered, pleasantly plump, or naturally thin. If you don’t find the right tops and bottoms that work with your frame, you’ll look bad in them no matter what. And don’t think that what looks great on the next gal will necessarily look the same on you.
Nowadays, business suits have become more fashionable and feminine - a far cry from the boring, square-shaped suits businessmen wear. While shopping for your business suit, keep in mind your body shape and what you would like the suit to enhance or conceal. If you have a straight build with an angular frame, which is typical of taller women, go for suits that create straight lines. While this may sound like the opposite of what you should be looking for, wearing a longer suit jacket with sharp lapels that aren’t too cinched or fitted at the waist will create a thicker appearance. If your suit is too form-fitting, you’ll only emphasize your angular shape, which can appear unflattering.
Curvy types look great in suits with rounded lines and fitted waists. Look for short jackets with round lapels and skirts with a rounded bottom. Women with petite builds are in luck, as there are plenty of suits that are designed just for small frames. Search the petites section of your favorite department store to find just the right fit. Never expect a regular suit to fit a petite frame the same way. This also applies to plus-sized women. Shopping for clothes that are already tailored to your body frame will make your search go by faster and allow you more options.
