A Quick Guide to Natural Fragrance

Throughout history aromatic oils have been used for their power to influence emotions and states of mind. Because of the powers of natural fragrance, natural plant essence has been used for centuries to make incense for religious and ritualistic purposes.    

 

When utilizing natural fragrance, it is best to find products that use “true essential oils” because these oils were made from the actual plant matter rather than chemicals. It is very difficult to make a home-made essential oil because it can take hundreds of pounds of plant material to create a potent enough oil for fragrance purposes. High quality organic essential oils can be purchased online, or in beauty and herbal supply stores.  

 

Rose

The rose is said to be the queen of flowers in Aromatherapy. It takes a very large quantity of rose petals to produce a very small amount of rose essential oil. However, this oil is extremely concentrated so only a very small amount is needed. The scent of roses has a sedative effect, and is used to ease nervous tension and stress. The scent is also said to lift the heart.

 

Lavender

This pale purple flower has a sweet, crisp scent. It is relaxing and soothing, and can be helpful in reducing stress. Many people use lavender to promote a blissful sleep because the scent is said to be able to aid relaxation and instill inner calm. Lavender is also used to soothe headaches.

 

Sandalwood

Sandalwood has a rich, woody, scent that many feel contains aphrodisiac qualities. Many individuals find that sandalwood has calming and soothing effects that help reduce stress and alleviate anxiety. The scent of sandalwood is often used to enhance meditation.

 

Jasmine

Jasmine flowers come in white and yellow species, and only blooms at night. It must be plucked in the morning to ensure it does not lose its beautiful aromatic scent. It is said to be an aphrodisiac, and its anti-depressant properties are said to help ease sexual tension and stress. Its exotic smell has been known to give body and fullness to any fragrance blend.    

 

Geranium

The fragrance from geranium is derived from steam distilled from the leaf. This slightly rose scent is believed to have balancing and calming effects. It may be beneficial in reducing stress and anxiety, and is used for irritability associated with PMS.

 

Patchouli

Patchoulis is a green herb with a dense, earthy scent. It is said to contain anti-depressant properties, and may be useful for relieving stress. The scent of patchouli has also been used to restore emotional balance.

 

To easily experience natural fragrance, place 10 – 15 drops of essential oil into your bath water before your next soak. Close your eyes and breathe in the aromatic fumes. Enjoy.
