Surfin’ Hairstyles
If you haven’t sported braids since you were wearing ruffled socks and Mary Janes, it is time to rediscover this do for your tresses. The beach is the perfect spot to flash braids for a couple of reasons. First, braided hair will stay out of your eyes and face while you are playing in the sun. You won’t have to worry about detangling the many snarls that a breezy beach day can cause. And you can sneak in a bit of sun-protecting conditioner before you put those braids in motion, to keep your hair soft and silky smooth in the evening hours.
Braids are fairly easy to do, especially if you begin with slightly damp locks. Before your hair dries completely, work a bit of leave-in conditioner through your tresses – preferably one that contains an SPF to protect your hair from the sun’s damaging rays. Once your hair has been properly prepared, start braiding! You can opt for one large braid that begins at the nape of your neck, which you can leave down or twist up into a bun. For a more playful look, try pigtail braids on either side of your head. Or divide the front of your hair into a few sections, and braid each one to the back of your head. You can catch all of the braids together into one ponytail, or simply leave them hanging loosely.
Another great look for the beach is a high ponytail that you wind up into a loose bun. Again, make sure that you apply the conditioner before styling, but you can achieve this look with damp or dry hair. Secure your bun with a ponytail band that sports a funky tropical flower or a couple of strands of seed beads for an extra touch of pizzazz. For a sleeker look, use damp hair that is combed straight back to a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Wind a bit more tightly for a chignon look. Again, don’t forget the fun hair accessories to give your do a lift.
A day at the beach doesn’t have to mean a bad hair day for you. With a little bit of preparation and a couple of fun accessories you can ride those waves in your own personal beach style. Surf’s up.
