Another option in cleaning oily hair is to use a clarifying shampoo once or twice a week for a deep, thorough cleansing. These products are made to strip the hair of any residue that other hair cleansing and styling products can leave, but they can also work effectively on stripping the tresses of excess oil as well. This is not a good choice to use daily, since the ingredients in the clarifying shampoos are too harsh for regular use. Keep in mind that daily cleansing with potent shampoos may counter your efforts at oil control by actually producing additional oil to balance the system. A little will go a long way.
You can also try a dandruff shampoo to keep your oily hair clean and shiny. Dandruff shampoos can be a good choice because the hormones that lead to an oily scalp can cause dandruff problems as well. The coal tar derivatives that are found in many dandruff shampoos can also be effective at keeping the oil at bay. The ingredients in these products may leave your hair so soft and shiny, that you will eliminate the need for any type of conditioning treatment as well.
Finally, some women find that a rinse, such as a vinegar wash, used twice a week or so can go far in keeping oily hair fresh and clean. Try mixing a half of a cup of vinegar with a full cup of water, and applying it to your hair after shampooing. If you can handle the “brr!” factor, allow the rinse to be on the cool side, since cool water will give your tresses an extra dose of shine. For a more alluring scent, you can mix your vinegar rinse with a few drops of essential oils, but make sure to do your homework before adding these or you may end up with more trouble than benefit.
Oily hair may require some extra TLC, but your oily scalp can sport as much bounce as the next head. With a few simple tips, you can successfully keep that additional oil at bay and allow the natural beauty of your hair to shine through.
