Deep Conditioning Plays a Major Role
The way your curly hair appears on a regular basis will depend a lot on your routine when it comes to shampooing and conditioning. One of the most common issues curly hair types have is frizz and lack of moisture. Deep conditioning in particular plays a huge role in hair care and maintenance.
The more hydrated the hair is, the healthier the curls will look and feel. Most curly hair types can get away with deep conditioning once a week but for women with hair that tends to lose moisture quickly, it is important to bump up the deep conditioning routine to 2-3 times a week. While this may be a bit of a nuisance to add into the routine, it is worth the results.
In addition to providing around the clock hydration, deep conditioning also fights breakage…yet another way to maintain healthy curls. For traditional conditioning, leave-in formulas are ideal and also help with styling.
Using the Right Styling Tools
Just as it is important to use the right hair care products, it’s also important to use the proper styling tools. This includes combs and brushes. Because curly hair is prone to becoming frizzy, avoid bristle brushes and fine tooth combs. Your best styling products in this category will be a wide tooth comb and your fingers.
These tools are much more effective at detangling and preparing your tresses for further styling, especially after getting out of the shower. The right anti-frizz serum or pomade and some scrunching with fingertips are usually all that’s needed to keep curly hair in top shape for a day or night out.
Other styling tools that cater specifically to curly hair include the use of curling irons and hot rollers. Large barrel curling irons are perfect for creating loose curls and switching up styles. Applying mousse prior to using the curling iron prevents frizz.
Some women don’t like to use hot rollers because they claim they still experience frizz. To fix this, carefully wrap the sections of hair in each roller and set with a mist of setting spray. Finish the look off with holding spray and frizz will be the least of your concerns.
Hands Off!
Scrunching and finger combing during the styling phase is the extent of how much interaction your hands should have with your hair. After your style is good to go, avoid constantly touching your tresses. Constantly touching your hair throughout the day or night actually contributes to frizz. This is especially true for polished and set curls. Leave your hair as is and it will maintain its fabulous look until you get home.
