How to Fight Flyaways

How to Fight FlyawaysNothing ruins the appearance of a neatly style hairdo like flyaways. These annoying strands that stick out from the rest of the hair are enough to drive some women crazy. Flyaways do not discriminate when it comes to hair type so just about everyone is fair game when it comes to these hairs gone wild. Luckily, there are ways to tame these runaway tresses.

Don’t be fooled by those lovely magazine ads or hair magazines that showcase pages of lustrous, gorgeous hairstyles, where every single hair is in perfect place. Photoshop does wonders in tackling the appearance of flyaways so in a sense it can be comforting to know that even those hot models can be targets. Unfortunately, Photoshop does not operate in the real world when it comes to making flyaways disappear, so what’s a gal to do?

Depending on your hair type, flyaways can appear during certain seasons. During the winter, cold temperatures and harsh winds can cause the outermost layer of the hair - known as the cuticle - to become rough, dry and prone to static. When static hits, flyaways are the most common result. Even during the summer, those with “bed head” and frizzy hair can experience the worst of flyaways.

One secret professional hair stylists share when it comes to static causing flyaways is to use unscented anti-static dryer sheets. After styling your hair, run a sheet over the top of your head where you see flyaways. This will remove the static cling and allow your wild strands to rejoin the rest of the group. Another helpful alternative to smoothing down flyaways and keeping them down is by using a hair product that will add a little weight to misbehaving strands without holding down the rest of your hairstyle. There are plenty of special hair products on the market that can be found at any beauty supply store. Hair waxes, pomades, and hairspray are enough to effectively keep flyaways in their proper place. Even hand lotion or facial moisturizer can be used to smooth down stray hairs.

Beat flyaways to the punch by also practicing proper hair care. When your hair is in tip-top shape, flyaways will no longer be a problem. If you have dry hair, your chances of getting flyaways increase greatly. After washing your hair, spray a leave-in conditioner to keep strands in place. Use a wide-toothed comb and blot hair softly with a towel instead of rubbing, which can cause breakage. Shampooing every other day will also keep your hair’s natural oils from being stripped, which can contribute to dry hair. Deep conditioning treatments and the use of thermal styling products will keep your hair hydrated and soft. Without the presence of static or dry, frizzy hair, flyaways will know their place and allow you to enjoy your hairstyle all day long.
