How to Get the Dry Look or the Wet Look

How to Get the Dry Look or the Wet LookWhen it comes to hairstyles, getting the right kind can be difficult, especially if you are not a professional hair stylist. Each year people turn to the catwalk to see what hairstyles will end up being the latest in hair trends. Two of the most recent must have styles are the wet look and the dry look. While the runway models have the luxury of pro stylists at their disposal, the following steps will allow you to recreate the look on your own.

The dry look is just as it sounds. This style describes hair that is fluffed out, tousled playfully and full of volume. Many recall images of angels, romanticism and other historical images when it comes to the dry look. Watch any movie set in medieval times and chances are you’ll see your favorite starlet sporting this ‘do. What makes this style so difficult to achieve is the challenge of finding a perfect balance. Too much pouf and you’ll simply look like you rolled out of bed or stuck your finger in a light socket. Not enough pouf won’t do justice to the actual hairstyle. So where do you begin?

The first step is to shampoo and condition your hair. Afterwards, apply a quality mousse product to your damp tresses. While blow drying use your fingers to carefully scrunch your hair. This will add the texture needed to make your hair wild and voluminous. Next, use fabric curling rods (also known as twist-ties) to create big sections of hair. Doing this will bring volume to your roots and create a soft curl. Then take a fine toothed comb to tease your roots. Apply a dry shampoo product to structure and thicken your locks without weighing them down. Pull down some choice strands of hair to frame your face and pull back the sides of your hair and pin them to the back of your head using bobby pins. For added volume you can use a voluminizing spray where needed.

If the dry look isn’t quite your style, then you may want to try the wet look. Again, this hairstyle is a difficult one to do because one wrong step can make it seem like you stepped out of the shower and didn’t have enough time to do your hair. One of the most popular ways to sport the wet look is in the form of a sculpted ponytail. This type of hairdo is all about texture and will include a combination of wet strands and twisted, hard strands.

To accomplish this look, shampoo and condition your hair. Apply a generous amount of styling/sculpting gel to your damp hair. Use your fingers to run the gel through from roots to ends. Because the style is the wet look you will not need to blow dry your tresses. Create long sections of hair by pulling and separating your hair. Twist each long section roughly using your fingers and then combine all the sections into one low ponytail that falls just above the nape of the neck. Next, use bobby pins to secure the twisted hair (no hair band is needed) and if there are shorter pieces that don’t hold, let them fall freely. This adds to the wild look. Allow the hair at the end of your ponytail to remain untwisted. You can use your fingers or a comb to gently style the ends.
