Keep your Hair Safe from Sun Damage

Keep your Hair Safe from Sun DamageWe all know the importance of protecting our skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Most of us are fairly conscientious these days to never venture out into the summer heat without the proper application of sunscreen. But what about your hair? Those same rays that can burn the skin and heighten the risk of cancer can also do a number on your tresses. It is just as important to protect your hair from the summer sun as it is to guard your skin. The good news is that there are a number of hair products on the market today that can help you do just that.

Sunscreen isn’t just for skin anymore. Your hair can benefit from an application of SPF as well, and fortunately, there are a number of hair products today that are happy to oblige. Keep in mind that using a shampoo or conditioner with an SPF may seem like a noble thing to do for your locks, but if you are rinsing the product out before you step out of the shower, you aren’t doing much in the protection department. A better choice is to use a leave-in conditioner with an SPF after your shower. Not only will this offer sunscreen protection that will remain when you step outside, it will also go far in keeping your hair from drying out under the heat of the sun.

For Color-Treated Hair

If you color your hair, it is a good idea to avoid all products with peroxide in them during the summer months particularly, since these can be extremely damaging to your hair. It is a good idea to deep condition any color-treated hair in the summer, using a product that contains jojoba oil, keratin, or another natural ingredient that will help to put the softness and shine back into your tresses. Hair products with a sunscreen are especially important for color-treated hair, to keep the strands from drying out or changing color. Use the highest SPF that you can find, but keep in mind that an SPF 10 is often the best that you can get for your hair, since anything higher tends to weigh hair down.

Another option in protecting your hair from the sun is to wear a hat when you are going to be outdoors for long periods of time. There are many cute options here, from a wide-brimmed straw version to a sporty baseball cap style. You can also avoid the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and seek a shady spot whenever possible. The less sun damage that your hair experiences over the summer months, the happier it will be. And the happier your hair is, the happier you will be. Guaranteed.
