Re-touching your roots is actually easy and will generally require about 30 minutes of your time. Once you have gathered the contents of your hair coloring kit, you’ll want to put on an old t-shirt and a pair of gloves if they are not already provided with your kit. You may also want to invest in a plastic shower cap to prevent color from dripping while you are waiting for the color to process.
·
Begin by dividing your hair into 4 sections and clip each section out of the way.
·
To keep hair dye from staining your skin, apply a petroleum jelly along your hairline.
·
Mix the contents of the hair color as the manufacturer’s instructions indicate.
·
Unclip a section of hair and using the enclosed applicator, apply the hair color starting at the roots and ending where the already processed color begins.
·
Lift hair underneath and apply the hair color in the same manner. Clip that section of hair out of the way.
·
Continue to apply the color on the remaining sections until you have re-touched all of the roots.
·
Cover your hair with the plastic shower cap.
·
Leave hair color in for 20 minutes and then re-distribute the remaining hair color from the bottle to the roots.
·
Allow the hair color to set for 5 minutes.
·
Rinse hair thoroughly until the water runs clear.
·
Apply the conditioner that is provided with your hair coloring kit to hair from roots to end. Leave in for at least 2 minutes and then rinse thoroughly from hair.
·
Blow Dry or air dry hair and style as usual.
Some Things to Keep in Mind:
·
If you have highlights or lowlights, it’s best to have a salon re-touch your roots unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you try to re-touch the roots yourself, you could wind up with an uneven mess.
·
If you’re not sure what type of hair coloring kit to purchase, look for one that is specifically made for root touch-ups.
·
If you’re not sure what color will match closely to your already processed color, check the hair-coloring product you are interested in purchasing. Some manufacturers will provide a phone number to call and ask a hair-coloring expert on advice for the perfect color.
