One of the biggest hair trends this year is natural curly hair. Whether your hair is naturally curly or permed, it can be a frustrating mess if you don’t know what hairstyle is right for you. Knowing what kind of haircut will work with your hair cannot only bring out the very best in your hair, it can also build self-esteem. Check out these ideas when choosing the right style for your curly hair.

One of the most important things to remember when working with curly hair is that it needs length to weigh the curls down. The best cuts are medium to long with added layers to help eliminate some of the fullness.

A good option is angled layers around the top to create an uneven fullness. An angled layer cut is easier to maintain. If you would like, ask your stylist to leave the length at shoulder level and cut in round layers to create luscious bouncy curls. A simple sculpting lotion applied to damp hair and scrunched dry will add more volume to this cut.

If you have medium hair and love the wild curly look, try a cut with minimum layers throughout the tips of your hair. A shoulder length romantic bob is a good style for this length. To style this cut, apply a sculpture lotion to damp hair and blow dry. Next, roll hair in hot rollers to about eye level and allow the rollers to cool. Remove the rollers and add a shine cream to the curls for added shine and definition. Keep in mind that this length will need extra care since this is at the state where split ends are at their worst.

For long curly hair, control with a frizz serum to help give it some style.   For a soft romantic look, work an anti-frizzing conditioner through slightly damp hair and twist into a bun. Allow hair to dry naturally and then remove your hair from the bun. If your curls are large and loose, you can ask your stylist to frame your face with layers. Generally large curls are frizzier and will require a frizz serum as well.

If you are having a lot of difficulty managing frizz, opt for a short cut. Curly hair is much more manageable if it is cut short. Your stylist can cut your hair short in different angles to remove a lot of the fullness. A few good styles for short hair is a curly bob or a natural afro. An easy way to style short curly hair is to spray hair with a holding spray (hairspray) or pomade while the hair is still wet. You should avoid blow-drying however, since it can create a poodle look on short curly hair.

A good rule of thumb to remember when looking for curly styles is to remember layers! Layers are your best option when cutting hair since it can thin out fullness. You should also avoid blunt cuts since this type of style creates too much fullness on the bottom. If you’re still not sure what cut is best for your hair, talk to your stylist.
