Sure Fire Tips for Perfect Cold Weather Hair

Sure Fire Tips for Perfect Cold Weather HairAs the cold weather sets in, your hair will show the effects of dry indoor heat, wind and less moisture in the air long before even your skin will feel it. No matter your hair type or texture, there are simple steps you can take before the dryness of winter makes your smooth curls frizz and your straight hair flyaway. Here also are tips for preserving your color through the coming blustery days.

If you have straight hair, the perfect winter cut is just below the shoulders and blunt. To keep bounce and body in drying winter hair, shampoo and condition with volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Straight hair needs products just as much as curly hair. When you get out of the shower, towel dry hair and spritz with a volumizing spray and a thermal protecting spray. These will maximize the effects of blow-drying with an ionic dryer (which dries twice as fast as a traditional blow dryer, so it reduces heat damage). A boar bristle and nylon paddle brush will also make straight hair smooth and shiny.

For those stray flyaways, finish your style with a dab of finishing lotion. This adds hold, but, unlike hairspray, won’t make your hair sticky or tacky. If you find that you have a lot of flyaways or frizz, gently rub a dryer sheet over the top of your hair. As long as you don’t do this frequently (too many times can leave air greasy) it’s a great quick fix for frizzies.

Wavy and curly hair can go wild in the dryness of winter. To help keep your curls in check, wash once a week with a moisturizing shampoo. If you must wash your hair on the days between, rub a small amount of shampoo into your scalp and roots, and rinse. Even on the days you don’t shampoo, condition three times a week with a hydrating conditioner applied to the middle and ends of your hair. Once a week use a deep conditioner too all parts of your hair except the roots.

Hair color can change as a result of drying from the weather and from the chemicals in color treatments. To protect colored, highlighted or streaked hair, don’t go more than two shades lighter than your natural color. This reduces the intensity of any lightening chemicals and helps maintain your hair’s moisture balance. Shampoo every other day – or less frequently if you can – and follow with a deep hydrating conditioner. Use products designed for color treated hair. They will strip away less moisture and won’t dull your shade. For longer lasting color and to preserve shine and bounce, treat your hair to an at-home glaze created to boost your color and restore shine.
