You’re excited because you have just purchased a new eye shadow palette but you’re not sure how to apply them. You’ve applied eye shadow before and have read various articles with tips on how to apply but you’re still clueless. A quick eye shadow 101 lesson on which brushes to use and how to apply will help take out the guesswork and mystery.

Recommended Brushes

Throw away the sponge-tip applicators that come with eye shadows and forget about using your fingers. Brushes provide a natural and even application, and you’ll end up using less of the product. Each woman should own the following brushes:    

·    An all-over shadow brush (a medium to large scallop-shaped brush for light, highlighting, base colors)

·    A small to medium shader brush (for lid colors)

·    A rounded crease brush (to line the crease, lash line and to apply intense colors)

·    A blending brush (to soften the shadows)

How to Apply Colors

·    Using the all-over brush, apply the lightest color starting from the lash line and up to the brow bone. Soften with the blender brush by using a “windshield wiper” motion (this is a crucial brush, since it blends away any harsh lines).

·    Using the shader brush, apply the lid color (usually a medium brown, beige, rose or pink) from the lash line to just below the crease. Avoid extending past the crease to prevent color from looking too harsh. Use the blender brush to soften both colors.

·    Using the rounded crease brush, apply the contour shade (the darkest one) last and sparingly! Start at the outer corners of the eye and make an inverted “V” shape – line the lash line and the crease of the eye slowly working inward to the middle of the eye. Again soften color with the blender brush.

Remember: Always start with a light application and add more color accordingly. For more intense shadow color, slightly dampen the applicator brushes (but not the blender brush) with a drop of bottled water. Overall, there are no rules when it comes to makeup, but these tips will help prevent even the most dramatic shadow colors from looking harsh.
