Not only is it important to know how to apply eyeliner, it’s essential to use the right colors. The color of eyeliner you choose should always complement your hair and skin color. Black eyeliner is the classic choice for most but make sure it suits you. Those with medium and dark brown hair, red hair, and black hair can choose between either classic black or brown eyeliner. Asian females tend to look best wearing black eyeliner. Brown eyeliner is suitable for those with light brown hair and blonde hair. Wearing black eyeliner with blonde locks can tend to look too dramatic. It’s okay to choose a more uncommon shade of eyeliner for special occasions. Fun shades to try include: navy blue, charcoal/shades of gray, purple or mauve.
If you have eyes that are set pretty close together, you’ll want to use your eyeliner to draw a tapered line on the inner corner (make sure it starts off thick), and then gradually make the line narrower as you get to the outer corner of the eye. On the flip side, eyes that are set too far apart can use liner to draw a line slightly away from the inner corner of the eye and making it thicker as it reaches the outer corner. Make sure to extend that line slightly upwards. Rounded/smaller eyes should use liner to outline the eyes at the base of the eyelashes up towards the outer corner. As you reach the outer corner, thicken the line and wing it upwards. Also line the bottom lashes to create a complete outline. If you have oval eyes, simply draw a fine line at the base of the eyelid then make it thick in the middle of the eyelids and extend it to the outer corner. For gals with larger eyes, use liner to draw a fine line around the contour of the eye as well as the base of the upper and lower lashes to create more definition. Make sure you connect the lines on the outer and inner corners of the eyes to “close” the look.
When it comes to lining your eyes, it also helps to use the right type of eyeliner. If you want a softer look that isn’t too dramatic or defined, then you’ll want to stick to pencil eyeliner. For the best results, run the tip gently along the back of your hand to soften and smudge the sharp tip. This also helps from irritating the skin as you drag the pencil along. Pencil eyeliners also work well for blending and fancier eye shadow looks. If you’re a pro with a steady hand, then you’ll be fine using liquid eyeliner. The only trick is to get it right the first time or else you’ll have to remove it and start all over.
