Makeup Someone Else’s Mind

Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines the word “impression” as a telling image impressed on the senses or the mind. According to human behavior specialists, we only have from seven to 17 seconds of interacting with strangers before they form an opinion of us. Therefore, when it comes to makeup, whether used to enhance features or hide flaws, it can leave a first impression ranging from the positive to the positively puzzling.

Applied with skill and simplicity, cosmetics can improve skin tone and awaken eyes, plump lips and disguise less-than-favorable features. It can make the difference between looking fresh and well rested for that important job interview or date with the new guy you met online. Wearing the wrong makeup—either too little or too heavy—for a particular occasion is a common concern for women, so here are several tips for making sure your face is flawless the next time you step out the door to meet anyone for the very first time:

·    Avoid heavily applied makeup for ALL first encounters including dates, job interviews, new client meetings, or the first day of a new job.

·    If you normally do not wear makeup, take some time before a first encounter to assess your skill level. Enlist a friend or professional to help you with a simple face-enhancing routine. Use magazines for “look” ideas.

·    Choose natural tones for the eyes such as creams, browns, grays, and plums. NEVER use colored mascara but use black, dark brown, or clear for a more natural look.

·    For daytime wear, avoid bright red or pink shades and glosses, choosing instead natural beiges, russets, and corals, depending on your skin tone.

·    NEVER wear glittered body lotion (unless perhaps it’s New Year’s Eve), nail polish or eye shadow—unless you are 13!

·    Always go light with perfume for a first encounter. Mist the air with your favorite scent and simply walk through it for a subtler effect.

Roman philosopher Platus (254-184 BC) wrote, "A woman without paint is like food without salt." For argument’s sake, let’s agree that ancient Platus has a point and that wearing makeup incorrectly, distastefully, or not at all, could give the wrong first impression—something achieved in 17 seconds or less.
