These are the mornings where you pray that your makeup goes on smooth and quick. But you’re flustered from running 10 minutes behind, a blemish has reared its ugly head (literally) overnight and your mascara goes on clumpy. We can’t help with the alarm, the razor or the coffee pot, but we just might have a solution for the mascara problem. And who couldn’t do with one less problem in the morning?
One of the newest gadgets to hit the makeup market is the motorized mascara brush. There are a few varieties so far, including a spinning brush and one that vibrates. Although the motions of the brushes are different, the idea behind these brushes is the same (and something we have known for years) – that the brush needs to move to get consistent coverage on (and between) the lashes.
The Spinner
Before you go running for cover, the word “turning” might be more appropriate than “spinning.” The brush moves relatively slowly. Some online bloggers have worried that a spinning brush could tear out lashes, but the motor moves slowly enough that such a disaster seems unlikely to us and other reviewers. The nice thing about this brush is that it can go both clockwise and counterclockwise, giving you the ability to switch directions for each eye. By spinning, the brush can separate your lashes and efficiently coat them more quickly – saving you time and frustration on those harried mornings.
The Oscillator
The concept behind this brush is similar to the spinner, but instead of rotating, the brush vibrates to accomplish the same agenda – separating the lashes and applying a smooth coat of mascara at the same time. The oscillations are quick – 125 micropulses per second – but don’t worry, the motion is not erratic or scary. Again, with this model, the intent is to save you time and effort. By separating the lashes and coating them at the same time, this brush can allow you to use less mascara to attain the great look you’re going for with thick plump lashes. And with less mascara overall, the danger of clumping drops even further.
The Verdict
Right now, there are people who love these brushed and people who shrug their shoulders at them. Some people have not been thrilled with the actual mascara, but love the brush and some people are put off by the fact that at this time none of these brushes comes with a replaceable battery, so when you’re out of mascara, you need a new brush. And at $15-$30 for these brushes, that is definitely a consideration. The bottom line is that. like most makeup tips and gadgets, they may work for you and they may not, but give them a try to see. Every moment saved on a hectic Monday can be priceless.
