Gemstones and Rocks Inspire a New Era in Makeup

Gemstones and Rocks Inspire a New Era in MakeupArtists are always searching for a new muse, for inspiration. A whole new era of makeup designers have found their latest bright idea on the ground, mixed in among the dirt. We’re talking about rocks – actual gemstones found in the mid-western United States. “I love the savage beauty of raw gemstones,” says Dick Page, artistic director of makeup for Shiseido and the man spearheading this revolutionary approach to makeup.

Page says, “I relate to the tones of everyday objects” (like squid ink, green grass and blue water), “not an abstract idea of colors.” That’s why you’ll be seeing colors, textures and facets that closely resemble a piece of fine quartz, a sliver of copper or a cross-section of pyrite sun. “These stones reflect different colors depending on what angle you view them from. I worked to capture that same type of iridescence in the makeup.”

Here’s what you’ll be seeing and enjoying. Eyeliner that takes it cues from pyrite sun, a stone that has metallic rays that steam out from is center. Page saw the way that the shades of gold and green in this stone play with each other in reflections of light. “Gold harmonizes with the skin so when you add it to a vivid color like green, it makes that shade less aggressive.” A soft eyeliner pencil impressively recreates the same effect when applied with a damp liner brush.

Lipstick still holds fast to its bubblegum pink roots, but is updated by assuming the texture and opalescent hue of rose quartz. It actually looks like it has depth that you could touch but it is smooth as silk. It helps to bring an ease and a bit of classy fun to dark eyes that would otherwise create a very serious look.

Mascara is so essential to makeup. What will surprise you is how black mascara mixed with a smidgen of teal – like a gleaming hunk of pyrite, makes you double-take when the light catches the hints color mingled within the deep black base. This highlights the flecks of color in any shade of eyes. It’s fascinating.

Eye shadows come in trios that are not revolutionary in their base colors, but in the flecks of gold that accent silver shadow, in coppers that aren’t brassy, and in dark navy with bits of silver so it never looks heavy. That’s the magic that happens when light hits gemstones – they become something they weren’t just a second ago. This amazing makeup does that same thing on your face. It catches light and plays with it in subtle ways that compliment your skin tone and the contrasts in the color of your eyes.

The finishing touch is the luminizing powder that replaces blush. “With the bright eye and lip colors in the collection, you only need a bit of sheen on your cheeks.”
