Changing your Makeup Palette for Winter

Changing your Makeup Palette for WinterA new season is upon us, and makeup needs to shift with the change in the weather. The bright shades and flirty pinks of summer won’t make the grade when the snow starts to fall. Just like you pack away the tank tops to make room for the cozy sweaters for colder days, you need to shift the shades in your makeup bag to give yourself a trendy winter look. Shimmers and pastels will not be sufficient to achieve a winter glow. Colors need to go deeper and richer to have the proper impact this season.

Matte is always a good choice for the cooler months, so say goodbye to the cream eye shadows and lip glosses in favor of the powder shadows and lipsticks. Keep your skin clean and completely oil-free to carry off this look with style. The matte look in eye color can include rich shades of mocha or cinnamon or a more playful green or turquoise. Even the classic colors like grey and brown are getting a little extra oomph this season with undertones of blues or reds. For the daring divas among us, you can take these shades to the limit with the smoky cat eye, complete with brown or black eye liner of either the pencil or liquid variety. Emphasize your peepers even more with plumping mascara and naturally thick eyebrows.

Heavy Metal still Rocks

For special occasions where you want to go more festive, metallic makeup will still be around for this season. You will need to select from silver or gold undertones, but from there you can choose all sorts of metallic shades, from violet to copper and many hues in between. If you want to use metallic makeup to do up your eyes, it is best to opt for the powder formulas, since cream shadows may be too intense for the shimmer. Cheek color can also have a metallic shimmer, but it’s best to stay away from this look in your lipstick unless you want to return to your junior high roots.

Lip Drama

Lips can take center stage in the winter, as long as they are well-moisturized and ready for their cold weather debut. Rich, deep colors on the lips will be the perfect complement to the winter fashion shades. Ruby-reds, tawny browns and even blood-red shades can look oh, so trendy this season. Keep your lipstick matte and your lips well shaped by starting with a lip liner that will give your lips definition. Follow up with an application of lip color using a brush instead of the tube. Blot lightly with a tissue and then add another light coat for additional staying power.

The same rule of the summer months still applies this season. Play up the eyes or play up the lips, but don’t emphasize both at the same time. For bold, richly hued smoky eyes, complement with a nude or paler shade of lipstick. If you want to go for the deeper crimson shades on the mouth, stick with the lighter, more subtle colors on the eyes.

Winter is a great time of year to try out a whole new look. Check out the rich makeup shades of the season, and see which ones will look beautiful on you.
