Mastering Blush: Application Tips Based on Face Shape

Mastering Blush: Application Tips Based on Face ShapeYou choose your outfits based on your body type, right? And before getting a new hair cut or style, you take your face shape into consideration, correct? Well, this same principle also applies when it comes to applying makeup - specifically blush. This particular makeup item is one of the easiest for women to make mistakes with. To guarantee a flawless application every time, it is important that women know how to use blush to enhance their beauty by using their unique face shape to guide them.

When done correctly, blush can be the finishing touch to a great makeup palette. When done wrong, the results can be downright unsightly. One of the worst makeup mistakes women tend to make when using this item is putting the color in the wrong place (as well as using too much of it). To avoid looking like a clown, it is crucial to know where to put the blush and how to control the amount you use. Just as certain makeup looks don’t work for everyone, the same can be said for blush.

Rectangular Face Shape: Apply your blush to your cheekbone in an almost horizontal, sweeping motion. As you bring the brush up towards your ear, slightly sweep the color upwards to create a rounded effect to soften the angles of your face. Do not apply color lower than the tip of your nose.

Oval Face Shape: Direct your brush along the top of the cheekbone, down to where your cheeks start to sink in a little bit. Use a sweeping motion to blend the color in well, working the color up towards your temples. However, do not apply the blush too close to your nose and eyes.

Square Face Shape: Locate the area underneath your cheekbone and apply your blush color to the area, using a half moon sweeping motion. Blend the color up to the top of your cheek and towards your temples to create contour. If needed, add a touch of blush to your chin and forehead to create a softer look.

Round Face Shape: Using diagonal sweeping motions, apply your blush color from underneath your cheekbones towards your jaw. Contouring plays a major role in creating definition for round face shapes so it is best to use a bit of a darker shade of blush to produce the right effect.

Triangular Face Shape: When applying blush, use a motion to create a sideways V on your cheekbones. This will create the illusion of wider cheekbones. Blend upwards from the cheekbones to the temple. Make sure to dust a bit of color onto the middle of your forehead to finish the look.

Aside from using your face shape to determine how you’ll apply blush, it is also important to use quality products. The blush you choose should be a formula that is suited for your skin type and in a color that complements your natural skin tone. The best makeup brushes for application are those with a rounded shape, with soft bristles that are designed for contouring and blending. Always use a mirror and good lighting when applying blush and remember to tap off excess color each time before putting the color onto your face.
