Smokey Eye + Eye Shape: How to Get It Right

Smokey Eye + Eye Shape: How to Get It RightOut of all the makeup looks out there, the smokey eye is more than likely going to continue to last the test of time. What makes this makeup effect so popular is the fact that you don’t have to be a supermodel on the cover of a magazine in order to wear this look. The everyday woman can easily snag the smokey eye for a night out on the town and special occasions. There are even daytime versions. However, the challenge is finding the right application technique that flatters a woman’s eye shape.

Asian Eye Shape

The first step for application is to apply the first eye shadow color (preferably a shimmery shade) to the whole eyelid using a quality eye shadow brush. Next, add the mid-tone color along the lash line to the outer corner. Using your eye shadow brush, gently blend upwards towards your brow bone, which creates the illusion of a crease, which Asian eye shapes typically do not have. To pull the smokey eye look together, use eye liner to create a dramatic line along the top of the lash line. Finish the look off by adding mascara. If needed, use an eyelash curler to open up the eyes and really make them pop.

Wide-Set Eyes

Start off by adding the base color to the entire eyelid. Extend the base color upwards towards the brow bone, Set your cut off point at just before your eyebrows. Next, apply your darker shade starting at the inner corner of your eye and began gently blending the color out to the middle of your eyelid. Using the same upward motion, extend the darker shade past the lid towards the brow bone.

The highlighter is next up, which should be added to the fullest part of your eyebrows, which is located right above the inner corner of the eyes. Apply the highlighter color to this inside area so that there is a contrast between the lighter color and the darker shade. Complete the look on wide-set eyes by lining upper and lower lash line. Avoid creating a line that is too thick.

Close-Set Eyes

Begin by applying the base color in a nude shade (shimmer is okay) to the whole eyelid and blend upwards towards the brow bone. Add the second color, the darker shade, to the outer corner of the eye using your eye shadow brush and start distributing the color towards the middle of your eyelid. Now blend the darker shade upwards and outwards, extending it past the outer corner of the eyelid.

Follow up with an angled brush loaded with the darkest shade (black or charcoal) and use that to line your lower lashes from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eye. Continue to apply the eye shadow as a liner from the outer corner all the way along the top of your lash line. You should now have a ring created. Finish with mascara. Focusing the darkest shades at the outer part creates the illusion of width for close-set eyes.

Deep-Set Eyes

Begin with the nude base color. Apply it over the entire eyelid, all the way up to the brow bone. Add your darker color next, starting at the crease in the center of the eye and drag the color along the natural curve. Blend gently up and towards the brow bone. Do not apply the darker color to the actual eyelid - the lack of color in this area serves to open up deep-set eyes. Line the eyes and finish with mascara.
