In general, blush is used in makeup to create a warm glow on the face, namely the cheek area. Many women have turned to blush to complete their overall look and to make cheekbones more pronounced. However, with the right application skills, blush can even be used to create a contoured, chiseled appearance. But that comes later (and with a lot of practice).
The problem many women run into when it comes to choosing blush is that they often pick a product that is the wrong color or type, and they don’t know how to apply it properly. Just as with other commonly used makeup items, blush comes in different forms, which have their own application methods and suitability for different skin types. Once you choose the proper blush for your makeup needs, the rest will be easy. When shopping for blush, you’ll run into the following types: liquid, gel, creams, sticks, mineral, and powder.
Liquid and gel blush is the most difficult to apply, so first timers should probably avoid this type until they become more familiar with the application process. Liquid blush can be too oily for some skin types, especially oily skin, so this type should be avoided. Gels tend to dry faster, making it harder to blend properly. Cream and stick blush is also another challenging form to apply. The reason for this is that the pigment that makes up the color of the blush can be hard to blend because it is denser. Cream and stick blush also tends to look too pronounced in color if applied with a heavy hand. When it comes to skin type, cream blush works well for those with dry and normal skin, while stick blush is ideal for those with oily skin. All skin types - especially sensitive skin - can benefit from mineral blush. This form of blush has grown to become immensely popular. Because it is very refined, mineral blush goes on easily and is a breeze when it comes to blending and application. The most widely used type of blush is powder. Powder blush is easy to apply and allows you to control the color. All skin types can use powder blush with the exception of dry skin types. In addition to these various forms of blush, there are also combination powder-cream blush available, which uses the best of both types.
Women with fair or pale skin should avoid deep colored blush shades, while women with darker complexions should stay away from dusty, light shades. Seek the assistance of a makeup artist to help you choose your ideal blush color. In terms of application, the easiest method is to use is to start off with a little bit of color and then gradually build it up until you get the desired result. Blush should be applied to the apple of the cheeks and blended outwards and upwards towards your hair line. Use long, gracious sweeps with the makeup brush in order to blend the color properly. Wearing blush takes practice so make sure to have a professional show you the proper techniques and practice the application process at home until you can do it in your sleep.
