The first tip is to understand what makes stage makeup different from other types when it comes to application. Even though you will be performing on stage, not everyone will be able to see your face. Aside from your outfit, your makeup should make your face stand out enough so that people sitting far away can still see your expressions and emotions as you perform. Step onto a stage without makeup or wearing the wrong kind and your face will appear washed out in front of the audience. If you have ever seen a stage performer up close, you’ll notice that the colors they wear are much more vivid and the amount of makeup is a lot heavier. However, when on stage, the appearance looks completely normal. There is definitely method to the madness when it comes to stage makeup.
Even though this type of makeup is more exaggerated for the venue, there is such a thing as the right and wrong way to apply the colors. Making your face stand out on stage does not mean putting huge red circles on your cheeks, completely lining your entire eye with black liner and wearing foundation that is too light or too dark. You’ll definitely want to avoid the “clown” effect.
Stage makeup is also designed to withstand excessive sweating and to work together with the glare of the bright lights that flood the stage while people perform. Dancers in particular have to make sure their makeup is applied in a way that will prevent it from coming off when they sweat. For those performing in productions that require a lot of movement and the possibility of sweating, it is best to purchase stage makeup that is water resistant, not water-based.
When it comes time to shop for your stage makeup products, visit a shop that specializes in selling this type of makeup or search online for a specialty store. This will increase the chances of not only finding the right products, but receiving assistance from people that know what they are talking about (in the event that you find a local place that sells stage makeup). Tell the salesperson what kind of makeup you’re looking for, what kind of performance you’ll be doing and your skin type and then see what they recommend. There are also stage makeup kits that contain all of the basic tools and colors you’ll need. The prices vary but can save you a lot of time searching for the right products. In addition to the makeup colors themselves, you’ll also want to purchase brushes, sponges and makeup remover.
