Your Guide to Mascara

Your Guide to MascaraAs the saying goes, “the eyes are the windows to the soul” and because your peepers are among the first features people notice, it is important to make sure that they look their best. Aside from using eye liner and eye shadow, mascara also helps to set off the whole look. When it comes to shopping for mascara, most women simply look for a cheap price and the color. However, there is more than meets the eye in terms of how to choose the best mascara.

Of course the color you choose is an important factor. Believe it or not, black mascara is not for everyone. For example, pale beauties with blonde hair should avoid wearing black because it can appear overwhelming. If you do choose to wear this color, be sure to only apply one coat in order to prevent makeup overload and the dreaded “tarantula eyes” look. Instead, opt for a grey mascara shade or dark brown. These colors look great on not only blondes but redheads as well. Do you have light colored eyelashes? Then you’ll want to try out brown shades as well. One helpful tip for finding mascara that looks natural but brings attention to the eye area is to choose a color that is slightly darker than your hair color.

The type of brush is also a big factor in how well your mascara will perform. You’ll want to go for a brush that is short, thin and curved. Short is best because it is easier to use, especially if you have trouble keeping your hands steady. Thin mascara brushes prevent smudging and are able to reach problem areas like the corners of the lashes, which often get clumped together with regular brushes. Curved brushes match the natural shape of the eye better, which not only is ideal for application but a more natural look as well.

In addition to the brush shape and the color, there are a variety of mascaras that use special formulas and ingredients in order to give fabulous results. It is important to find a style that matches your taste in makeup. For example, if you want a more natural look, then you’ll want to avoid thickening mascara formulas, which offer a dramatic look that can be too overpowering for daytime wear. Mascaras that lengthen lashes are ideal for those with shorter eyelashes that want to open up their eyes more.

Although there are some formulas that curl or “bend” the lashes when the mascara is applied, you are better off using a traditional eyelash curler and then applying your mascara. Curlers allow you more control and make it easier to put mascara from the bottom to the tips. Having a curler will also save you more money in the long run instead of paying top dollar for mascara that boasts a curling formula.
