How to Color Facial Hair

How to Color Facial HairStepping out with a new hair color can give you an all new self image, but if you’re stepping out with a beard that is no where near the new color it can shatter that new image in a matter of seconds. It can be easy just to use the same dye that you used on your head, but that is a really big no-no. Your beard is much harder to dye than the hair on your head, so instead you will want to look for a product that is specifically designed for facial hair only.

Your first step when coloring your facial hair is to choose a color that is closest to the color on your head. If your hair is a color that is not a common hair color like blue, you will probably want to consult in a hair coloring professional for this job. It’s probably also a good idea to seek a professional if you are dying your hair more than two shades lighter than your hair color. You don’t want to end up with an orange beard!

Once you have found a product that will work for you, follow the directions located inside of the box to test for any allergies you may have. You should perform the test at least two days in advance. Test the product on the inside of your elbow and leave it there for at least 48 hours. If you don’t break out with a rash or have any other irritations, then you’re read to begin coloring your facial hair.

Now that you are ready to begin, you will want to mix equal amounts of the two tubes into the tray found in the product’s box. If you don’t have a lot of hair to cover, you may want to mix small amounts only and save the rest for another application. Before you save the two tubes however, make sure that it is safe by checking the manufacturer’s instructions or calling their toll free number that is generally printed on the outside of the box.

Once the mixture is ready, put on the pair of gloves and use the applicator, both of which should have been provided with the product. Next, scoop enough of the dye mixture onto the applicator and apply it to your beard. Be sure to cover areas such as your side burns and mustache as well. If you get any of the dye on your skin, you can use a q-tip dampened with water to clean it up.

Next, set a timer and leave the gel in for at least 5 minutes. If the gel has darkened it is working. If you don’t want extremely dark hair, stop. The longer the time, the darker your results will be!

Finally, wash the gel off using a mild soap and rinse with warm water. Congratulations, you are finished! Your results will last as long as your beard tends to grow. When you start seeing roots, it means it is time to color again.

If you find that your coloring job was disastrous or you simply don’t like the results, you can shave off your beard. If that’s not an option for you, talk to a professional colorist about your options. Happy Facial Coloring!
