What Is Exfoliation?
How Is It Beneficial?
The term “exfoliation” may be intimidating to the male species because of its association with feminine primping. However, put aside the gender classification to consider the process of exfoliation, which simply refers to any method that removes dead skin from the surface, exposing healthier underlying skin. Exfoliation reveals softer and more even-toned skin by removing dull and lifeless cells that have accumulated. Research shows that men’s skin is indeed thicker than that of women’s. Hence, men may experience the most benefit from exfoliation. Moreover, benefits of exfoliation aren’t just limited to facial skin – the entire body benefits, especially areas that may be problem-prone to men including the chest, back, hands, and feet.
Methods of Exfoliation
The apprehension that men may feel in purchasing exfoliation products or services may well fade after experiencing the benefits. There are several methods of exfoliation, and men have the option of enjoying these services in a spa setting, or using exfoliating products in the privacy of their own home. Either way, both are becoming increasingly accepted among the male population and are more available than ever.
Methods range from sponges and loofah pads, gloves and stones, to scrubs and creams that contain agents such as Glycolic, Salicylic, and Alpha-Hydroxy Acids. When considering an at-home method, you may try your hand at a few options before choosing which suits you best. Some men a simple exfoliating sponge or scrub since the myriad of products to choose from can be intimidating. However, if you wish to purchase exfoliating agents, you’ll want to look for one of the above acids. There is no shortage of products to consider, but be aware that each product contains varying percentages of these ingredients.
Methods also include deeper treatments like micro-dermabrasion, which utilizes tiny crystals to remove deeper imperfections such as scars or wrinkles but has a longer recovery and more discomfort. Spa versions of these methods can be pricey, but at-home systems can be purchased at a fraction of the cost.
Redness and irritation are common side-effects, but should subside within a reasonable time, depending on the intensity of the treatment. Frequency of exfoliation depends on your skin type and the intensity of the exfoliation method - the more intense your exfoliation, the less often you will exfoliate. For men with more break-out prone skin, weekly exfoliation may be sufficient. It is best to find the frequency that works for you through trial and error, while some choose to consult a dermatologist. It is important to remember that exfoliation leaves skin more vulnerable to sunlight, so avoid it until skin is recovered.
You’ve now been enlightened on the benefits of exfoliation and why they aren’t just for women. We encourage all men to add exfoliation to their regular skin-care regimen. Happy exfoliating!
