Get the Facts about Men & Acne

Get the Facts about Men & AcneMale adult acne can be an annoying condition to deal with, but treating it can make it worse if you don’t have all the facts. Due to the numerous acne myths and beliefs running rampant, many men mistakenly take the wrong steps when it comes to caring for their skin, which can worsen their acne. When you know the facts as well as the fiction behind the issue, you’ll be able to successfully treat acne and learn how to take better care of your skin.

Many have the common misconception that only guys with oily skin types can get acne. This isn’t entirely accurate. It is true that men with oilier complexions are more prone to developing acne because of the presence of too much sebum (oil) but the truth of the matter is that just about any man, regardless of his skin type, can develop acne. To add onto this topic, acne can follow a man from his teenage years well into adulthood. This usually occurs when there is a combination of hormonal imbalances and improper skincare. For this reason alone, it is vital to practice proper skincare habits early on.

When it comes to exfoliating and acne, there are a few dos and don’ts. It’s been said that using a good exfoliator can help control acne - but that all depends on the state of your acne and what type of exfoliator is being used. Men with severe acne should stay away from any type of exfoliating, since this can actually irritate the skin and make acne worse. For men with mild to moderate acne, you can test the effects of a gentle exfoliating face scrub (one with Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid are ideal) on your skin and see if it improves your acne over time. Remember to do a patch test first to make sure your skin doesn’t have a negative allergic reaction. If you’re not sure about what type of exfoliating face scrub you should use, ask your dermatologist to recommend one.

Some men are also under the impression that tanning can help improve their acne as well as its appearance. The initial results of the tan can cause the skin to look smoother and can even conceal acne scars. Unfortunately, once the tan wears off, you’re right back to square one. There is even the chance that your tan can cause more breakouts and actually darken your existing acne scars. Tanning only serves as a temporary solution at best but not a good one for your skin in the long run.

It’s long been said that eating certain foods can trigger acne. Whether you believe it or not, there has yet to be concrete evidence that foods like chocolate, junk food and pizza are solely responsible for causing acne. To avoid finding out if this is true for you or not, stick to a healthy daily diet filled with the appropriate fruits and vegetables. Water is also the key to maintaining a good complexion, acne or not. The sooner you start to implement such lifestyle changes, the easier it will be to manage your acne.
