A Guy’s Guide to Looking Great In the Sun

A Guy’s Guide to Looking Great In the SunMany guys have spent a lifetime in the sun, at the beach and playing outdoor sports without paying attention to what was happening to their skin. If that’s you, there are solutions to your skin and hair care woes. If you’re just beginning your outdoor exposure, take some cues from the guys who’ve been there and begin to take care of your skin and hair now so you’ll continue looking great later.

If you’ve got dry or sun damaged skin that’s leathery, flaking or dull, you’re looking older than you’d like and you’re more prone to deep set wrinkles that will last. Start with a moisturizer and SPF protection. These aren’t just for girls and they sure aren’t meant for wimps. Men’s skincare is designed to handle all you put your skin through – shaving, sweat, sun, wind and less sleep than recommended. If your skin is already very dry or sensitive after shaving, opt for a moisturizer with little or no scent. If you’re active then you sweat and sweating makes skin less supple. Combine that with saltwater, chlorine and sunburn and you’ve got the makings of leather-skin. Moisturize in the morning and at night and after you wash your face during the day. Don’t be afraid to exfoliate. This will shed dead skin and minimize your pores. Remember that soap is very drying too. Look for moisturizing bar or liquid soap. Your skin will also improve if you take warm showers instead of hot. Be sure to drink 125 ounces of water to prevent dehydration and up your calcium intake because calcium is also lost while you’re out there sweating.

If dry skin is a problem for you, you need to protect your skin while you’re shaving. Start with warm water instead of hot. Take the time to massage your shaving cream or gel into your skin. This helps the moisturizers in the cream to absorb into your skin and it also makes your dry skin less likely to cause nicks. Don`t shave too close, if you can go with stubble do it. Use single-edged razors to protect your skin from irritation. Rinse with plenty of water, but follow with a moisturizer as water is drying all by itself. Pat gently with a towel; don`t rub. Always follow a shave with moisturizing cream to soothe and protect your skin.

The same elements that are rough on your skin also wreak havoc on your hair. For great summer hair try these simple tips. Simply wetting your hair before you get in the ocean or pool will help to decrease the amount of chlorine and salt your hair will absorb. If your hair is already parched you want shampoos and conditioners and styling products that contain vitamin B5 and B8. Eating a high protein diet with calcium and zinc will also help. Stay away from products with high alcohol content (alcohols listed first in the ingredients.) Use a little sunscreen on your hair – you can find products with SPF or just rub a little of your regular sunscreen in your palms and run it through your hair.
