The first category was the one we expected. These guys admitted (much to their chagrin and efforts not to respond) that there is a little trepidation when they step up to the mirror. They said that they have their features that are either just the way they like them and getting better (for the 20 – 35 crowd) like biceps and pecs or six pack abs. “I know I like my abs, so I make sure they’re good and tight before I look. I always start there because I’m not so proud of my shoulders. If I get a good dose of what I like about myself then I can take the rest.” So I this first category, there is a lot of flexing and sucking in and pushing out that happens before they open their eyes. “I always suck in my gut before I look in the mirror. Every once in a while I let it out just to see.”
The second category are those hard bodied boys that love to take off their shirts and have an insatiable need to stretch in public. Surprisingly this group was not limited to young men. If you’ve got it, it seems you never outgrow the need to stretch it out and strut it. “I spend more time in the gym than in my apartment. I work for this (stretches to emphasize that he means his body – thanks, I might have been confused without the visual) and sometimes the bod needs to be seen.” Many guys in this category weren’t quite so needy, but they all love what they’ve got and enjoy turning a head or twelve.
The third category was by far the funniest, although not one we wanted to inspect for long. This last group has gained possession of a magic mirror that lets them see…something other than the rest of us. God bless these guys, they were somewhere between exhibitionists and show boys and all of them should have kept it on rather than take it off. These guys said such things as, “This gut is rock hard, baby,” as he shook his bowl full of jelly belly. And, “Check out the glutes. Haven’t changed since high school football. I’ll bet I could still wear the snot out of those pants.” Huh?
These guys also loved to flex, but they were missing one key ingredient – muscle. They were a happy bunch though so we decided that as long as they promised to keep their baggy clothes on, we would keep on smiling when they flexed as they walked by.
