Major Fashion Do’s for Dudes

Major Fashion Do’s for DudesA surprising, and rather amusing, new trend in vogue fashion is menswear. But it’s not what designers are putting out; it’s what average guy is putting on all by himself. Not that we’re saying men can’t dress themselves. Most are quite capable and leave us breathless. But some leave us breathless from laughing so hard. After a walk with two of my best friends down one of London’s most trendy boulevards, here’s the scoop on what’s a major do and major don’t for dudes who are fashion-fearless.

Let’s start with the complementary “here’s to ya” for walking out your front door wearing that! The first thing we all agree on is that guys who know themselves well enough to dress in their own unique style are hot! Whether it’s rocker, punk or boardroom, if you own your look, you’ve got our vote.

To be more specific, we love a pair of crisp jeans topped with a navy blazer over a loosely buttoned oxford. (Please, no chest hair. Wear a dark T.) This look says that you cared enough and are fashion savvy enough to put that together but you’re not obsessed with yourself. Leaves more room for you to obsess over us!

Navy and shades of dark blue seem to be all the rage on good-looking guys these days. A dark blue checked oxford untucked over your well-worn jeans, a navy fedora and dark glasses… marry me! What any version of this outfit says is that you’re comfortable and just edgy enough to get a girl’s attention.

Here’s something new. Dudes, big ones with big muscles, sporting cardigans with nothing underneath. To be honest, we weren’t sure how we felt about this at first. But now we’re sold, as long as your top button isn’t too far down your chest. Freddie Mercury you are not. Our rules for wearing the cardi: It should be fitted, but not tight. Don’t show us your complete cleavage package. And go for it with the stripes and argyles. You don’t have to be muscle-bound to impress us. Just choose a cardigan that works well for your body.

Pop that collar, please! Back in the day, the popped collar was cool. Today, it’s oh so sexy. Pop ‘em all – polos, oxfords, and, our to-drool-over favorite, your long wool coat.

This last one takes a very special man to pull off. If you’re that guy, we L-O-V-E your rolled up pants. You’ve got to be funky, groovy and completely cool or you look like you’re trying to step through a puddle, but when you pull it off, it’s a great look. We liked the guy in the black pants and button-down vest with bleach-white canvas shoes.

And now, just for kicks and giggles, the fashion don’ts of the century.

1. Please stop coloring your hair pink. End of discussion.

2. Coveralls beyond the garage door? Are you serious?

3. A few cool rings. A bracelet or two. A necklace if you’re a surfer. And that’s it. If you’re accessorizing with enough jewelry to set off the alarms at the airport, you’ve gone too far.

4. Do not. Repeat; do not wear colored shoe laces in any of your shoes…ever.

5. Guys belts have to go through the loops on your pants. Around the outside of your shirt is so not okay!

There you have it. Fashion musts and busts for all you boys out there.
