Men and Belly Fat

Men and Belly FatMen, just like women, carry around belly fat, although most men tend to carry it a little too proudly. While it may be the butt of many jokes, the reality is that belly fat in men is not a healthy sign. If you’re carrying around a little pudge, the good news is that there is something you can do about it, so read on to find out how you can rid yourself of this unsightly sidekick.

If you’ve been a little lazy when it comes to tackling your belly fat, it’s important to know that while it may not seem like a big deal to you, too much fat in this particular area can actually put you at higher risk for developing certain health problems. The most common include: insulin resistance, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and some types of cancer. The best solution for belly fat is to improve your eating habits and practice moderate exercise. When your metabolism is in working order, your health will become much better and your chances for getting certain ailments will greatly decrease.

In terms of exercise, many men will turn to sit-ups or crunches. However, this alone won’t remedy the problem. There is more to the belly fat issue than targeting just the stomach area. While sit-ups and crunches do strengthen the abdominal muscles, it isn’t enough. Instead, you should attempt to introduce regular or moderate exercise into your life - at least 30 minutes a day. As you get more used to the physical activity, challenge yourself further by increasing the periods of time you exercise. But this should only be done after you’ve been working out for a few weeks to months. Don’t push yourself too hard if you’re exercising regularly for the first time.

Specific exercises to add into your daily routine include swimming, bicycling, and even housework, such as yard work or gardening. All of these activities allow your heart rate to speed up and encourages strong breathing, all of which work together to burn off excess fat. Additionally, walking is one of the easiest exercises to squeeze into your lifestyle. All of these exercises, in addition to a well-balanced diet, will melt the belly fat off. Of course this won’t happen overnight so be realistic when it comes to your approach of getting rid of belly fat. It may take a few weeks to even a month or so to see results, but once you do, you’ll know that you’re doing right by your body.

Speaking of diet, it is important to know that if you’re serious about getting back into shape, you’ll need to burn more calories than you consume on a daily basis. So avoid eating too many foods that are high in fat and carbohydrates and instead reduce your portions to smaller quantities. If you’re a fan of alcoholic drinks, such as beer and wine, just know that you’ll need to cut back on these as well. Alcohol is not only high in calories but aids in increasing your appetite, which is not a positive move for your belly.
