While there are plenty of fabrics that can be worn without much thought, denim comes with some rules. When it comes to men, it is essential that you know the dos and don’ts of wearing denim. The most important rule to abide by is to never wear denim from head to toe. Period. No exceptions. While it may seem like a good idea, the fact is that denim overkill is an eyesore and anything but fashionable. The key is to pair an article of denim clothing with other signature pieces in your wardrobe. It’s all about balance. So break up any all-denim outfits you have and mix and match them with other outfits in your closet.
One “denim do” to make note of is to choose the right fit and cut when shopping for jeans. Denim jeans are an essential piece of clothing that can make or break any outfit so you’ll want to make sure that the jeans you choose flatter not only your style but your body type as well. Men with lean builds should opt for denim jeans with a slim boots style, which has a low rise, fits close to the legs above the knees then widens slightly to a slight boot cut at the bottom. Slim denim jean styles in general are ideal for lean builds, especially if you are on the taller side. Not really comfortable with the whole “skinny” style? Then you can opt for a relaxed, straight style, which are ideal for most male body types, including men that are skinny but want to draw attention away from their skinny legs. These kinds of denim jeans can be worn loose and typically have a normal rise with tapering along the leg of the jeans.
A “denim don’t” to avoid is wearing a denim jacket with denim jeans, especially if they are the same or similar in color. Again, this is the dreaded all denim outfit that all men should stay away from. If you’ve got a great denim jacket that you want to show off, you can create a timeless look by pairing it with a comfy pair of chinos, khaki pants or black jeans. Match it up with a white tee or button up shirt and you’ll be sure to stand out in a good way.
