The challenge for men with acne who shave is to balance a good and disciplined skincare routine with a good shaving routine. Grazing a razor across your face while dodging acne breakouts can result in a horrible, bloody outcome. The key is to make sure you are taking care of your skin and acne to the point where the presence of a razor or electric shaver won’t further irritate your skin. This may be easier said than done for those of you who don’t invest any time in your skin to begin with.
To whip your complexion into shape, it is essential to include exfoliation in your daily skincare routine. Exfoliating is a very effective yet gentle way to slough off layers of dead skin cells, which tend to pile up and cause problems. By exfoliating your face once to twice a week, you’re able to promote newer, healthier skin cells to grow, making it easier for your facial hair to push through and get a proper shaving.
Use skincare products that cater to acne prone skin or sensitive skin types. There may be certain times when your skin is at its worst with breakouts or inflamed areas. This is not the time to shave. Stick with your skincare products and use them as directed to get your skin back on track. When you know how to take care of your particular skin type, the rest of your skin maintenance will fall into place.
The best way to avoid cutting yourself and aggravating your acne further is to invest in a good quality electric shaver. This will eliminate the chances of cutting your pimples and irritating the skin. It is important to know that facial hair grows in different directions. Whether you’re using an electric shaver or a regular razor, shaving the wrong way will ruin your skin and inflame your acne no matter how well you care for your complexion. It may be very tempting to go against the grain for a closer shave, but this also puts you at risk for nicks and cuts. Pair that with acne and it can be a mess.
If you’re more attached to a tried and true razor, your best bet is to shave while in the shower. Never use water that is too hot or too cold. Warm water works perfectly for opening your skin’s facial pores. This softens stubble and makes for a better shaving situation. Make sure the razor you’re using isn’t dull and only use light, sweeping strokes. If you’re pushing hard to get the job done, chances are you need new blades or a new razor. There are also waterproof electric shavers on the market so you have two ways of getting a closer, smoother shave without putting your acne prone skin at risk.
Regardless of whether you shave outside the shower or in, be sure to moisturize. To help your skin overcome the daily stresses of shaving and to alleviate acne symptoms, facial masks are a great way to pamper your complexion and soothe any red, irritated or inflamed skin. Using a facial mask once to twice a week with your skincare and shaving routine will make the task much easier and allow your skin to be at its best.
