Half of all men snore and it doesn’t matter whether you’re thin or overweight. Men who snore often do so because of narrow airways between the nose, mouth and lungs. For men that are overweight, the neck is often thicker, resulting in more pressure being placed on the airways between the nose, mouth and lungs. For some men, having a small jaw or certain bone structure can lead to snoring. The main health problem that can arise due to constant snoring is apnea, which is a condition that causes a person to stop breathing. Needless to say, that is a serious issue. Those suffering from apnea, namely sleep apnea, tend to have a score of side effects brought about by the condition. Sleep apnea in particular can be dangerous for sufferers because the lack of sleep on a daily basis can lead to sleepiness during the day and constant headaches. When paired with driving, operating machinery, or other daily activities, this can result in accidents and even death. Sleep apnea is the most common result when it comes to snoring, which makes men a walking target for disaster.
Not only does sleep apnea deprive you of getting a good night’s rest and the ability to breathe properly, it can also damage your bodily functions. Sleep apnea can negatively affect the heart, arteries and even your metabolism. Suffering from this condition causes a person to stop breathing multiple times throughout the night. After a certain period of time, the body can suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, and becomes more at risk for a stroke or heart attack. Each time a person wakes up during the night due to their condition, the tissues within the body that lack oxygen quickly becomes filled with oxygen. While this sounds like a good thing, it isn’t, namely because this repeated pattern triggers the nervous system and produces chemicals that not only leaves unhealthy plaque in the blood vessels, it also damages the tissue. Over time, this can lead to a number of health problems.
One of the best ways to tackle sleep apnea is to avoid snoring in the first place. While there is no exact cure, there are some methods that can be put into place to alleviate your snoring. Sleeping with your head propped up by pillows can help keep your head elevated during sleep, which can prevent snoring. Overweight men should look into shedding excess pounds to reduce the pressure placed on the airways during sleep. Taking the necessary steps to follow a steady sleep routine can also help you sleep better. Make it a habit to go to bed at the same time every night to get your body used to the routine. There are also special breathing strips that can be bought in stores to stop snoring. If your snoring issue is really bad, you may want to make an appointment with a doctor to evaluate your condition and figure out what your options are.
