Even though most of us tend to be better about making healthier choices when it comes to our daily diets, it goes without saying that when it comes to a BBQ, we toss our better nutrition out of the window. While it is okay to break the rules once in a while and indulge, the truth is that a traditional plate of your favorite BBQ grill items can cause you to consume thousands of calories. This can set back anyone’s dieting regimen. The main key to grilling healthier is by switching out the traditional items with more nutritious options. For example, start with the meat you love to throw down on the grill. Hamburgers and hot dogs are the most popular when it comes to a BBQ. But the next time you head to the grocery store to pick up your grilling items, opt for meat products that are lean, such as poultry sausage (to replace hot dogs that are high in fat), burger substitutions like garden burgers, bison burgers and even turkey burgers. With the right seasonings and condiments, your guests won’t be able to tell the difference. Other nutritious meat options for the grill include replacing fatty chicken wings, steak and ribs with fish, chicken breasts (skinless) or you can have fun and grill kabobs made of fresh veggies and chunks of chicken.
If you’re the type of man that does not adapt to change well, make the transition gradually by doing some experimenting on your own before hosting your BBQ shindig. Have your family help out in the preparation process - your children will especially enjoy putting together skinless chicken and veggie kabobs. To make the change less noticeable, use the same spices, seasonings and other ingredients that you would normally use. You may have to make a few changes depending on the type of meat product you choose to grill with. Remember, practice makes perfect so continue your grilling experiments until you have found a few dishes that you are happy with and know your guests will enjoy.
Need some tips? The Internet has plenty of information and recipes on how to grill different kinds of meat products. In time, you’ll be a nutritious BBQ guru.
